Jannik Sinner returns to world No. 1: An exciting battle in Turin

Jannik Sinner reclaiming the world No. 1 ranking from Carlos Alcaraz makes their ATP Finals rivalry extremely noteworthy.

This is the first time since 2016 (Murray-Djokovic) that the year-end No. 1 will be decided at the season-ending championship.

Jannik Sinner currently leads with 11,500 points, exactly 250 points ahead of Carlos Alcaraz (11,250). However, the situation will completely change next week when points from the 2024 ATP Finals are deducted. As the defending champion, Sinner will lose 1,500 points, leaving him with 10,000 points. Meanwhile, Alcaraz, who missed last year due to injury, will only have 200 points deducted, retaining 11,050 points. Therefore, Alcaraz will officially take the lead at least one week before the two face off in the final battle in Turin.

This situation clearly favors Alcaraz. Even if Sinner successfully defends his title, he cannot fully control his destiny, which is unusual for a player holding the No. 1 spot. Conversely, Alcaraz can finish the year as No. 1 without winning the tournament, as long as he achieves minimum required results depending on his rival’s performance. This provides a major psychological and tactical advantage for the Spanish player.

The race for the No. 1 spot at the 2025 ATP Finals will be highly exciting.

Specifically, the ATP Finals points system works as follows: each round-robin win grants 200 points, semifinals 400 points, finals 500 points, totaling 1,500 points for an undefeated champion. All participants receive 200 participation points (already included in the current rankings).

In 2022, Alcaraz burst onto the scene by winning his first US Open, becoming the youngest player ever to reach No. 1. Jannik Sinner did something similar in 2024: winning the Australian Open, US Open, ATP Finals, and three Masters 1000 titles, ending the season convincingly at the top. However, this time the competition is tighter than ever. Alcaraz recently suffered a surprising early exit at the Paris Masters, losing the No. 1 spot temporarily. Meanwhile, Sinner is in dominant form, winning his second consecutive Paris Masters title on home turf in Turin, where he went undefeated in 2024.

Still, the head-to-head record favors Alcaraz: 6-4 overall, including winning 4 of the last 5 matches on hard courts. Alcaraz also has a 12-match winning streak on European hard courts. Meanwhile, Sinner has never successfully defended a major title in his career, which is a significant pressure.
