Djokovic Confirms Vision to Retire at 2028 Olympics, But Injury Concerns Cast Doubt on Fulfilling This Dream

Tennis icon Novak Djokovic has once again discussed his career trajectory, expressing his hope to represent Serbia at the 2028 Olympics and retire there, while acknowledging that persistent injuries and physical decline could compel him to retire sooner.

At the Paris Olympics last year, Djokovic secured the gold medal, fulfilling a long-held ambition. Yet, entering 2025, the tennis star’s performance has been hampered by physical issues, showing signs of fatigue in several key tournaments. On the eve of this week’s ATP Finals, he finally announced his withdrawal due to an unresolved old injury. Unlike previous occasions, his statement lacked the usual optimism about competing next year, sparking widespread speculation about his 2026 participation. He apologized to fans on social media, expressing his initial excitement to give his all in Turin, wishing other players success, and sharing his eagerness to return soon. However, this last-minute withdrawal drew some criticism, as he had already been included in the initial draw, and pulling out so close to the event affected the organizers.

After winning the Athens ATP 250 event by defeating Lorenzo Musetti, Djokovic elaborated on his retirement plans. He revealed that he has always been accustomed to setting goals well in advance during his career, and now that he has achieved all possible honors, he hopes to compete for a few more years, ultimately to take his final bow representing Serbia at the 2028 Olympics. However, when discussing the feasibility of this vision, his tone was uncertain: “Some things are not entirely in my control; I can only do my best to stay physically and mentally healthy.”

In fact, Djokovic has faced multiple injury setbacks this year, raising serious doubts about his ability to last until the 2028 Olympics. To realize his goal of an Olympic farewell, he may need to drastically reduce his tournament schedule and focus entirely on prolonging his career; otherwise, early retirement might become an unavoidable reality. For this tennis legend, finding a balance between physical limits and professional aspirations will be a key challenge in the coming years.

Besides the inevitable effects of age and physical condition, it’s unclear if other uncertainties weigh heavily on him. The Olympic gold medal was once his obsession. After the 2024 Paris Olympics, he often carried that precious medal with him, proudly showing it off whenever possible. When meeting Zheng Qinwen, he even asked, “Where’s your gold medal?” I guess he wanted to wear his medal while taking a photo with Zheng, but unfortunately, Zheng didn’t have one on hand.

The moment he won the final point at the Paris Olympics, his overwhelming joy and excitement were deeply moving!

His career, from a raw talent to a mature champion, from being criticized to earning respect, with all its hardships and joys, is easy to empathize with and truly touching!

We hope Djokovic at least gets the chance to compete in the 2028 Olympics and fulfill his dream of retiring on the Olympic stage wearing his national flag.
