No titles in nearly four years! Chinese players underperform in 2025

Despite Zheng Qinwen’s breakthrough at the French Open and Wang Xinyu reaching her first WTA singles final, no mainland Chinese player won a singles title on the tour this season, resulting in the poorest performance in nearly four years.

#2022: 1 Title#

In the 2022 season, Zhang Shuai reached the singles final in Lyon, France. Facing Ukraine’s Yastremska in the final, Zhang fought through adversity including biased calls and a crowd mostly supporting her opponent, ultimately securing the victory with great determination.

This title made Zhang Shuai the third Chinese player with the most WTA singles titles after Li Na and Zheng Jie, and marked her first tour singles title in five years, with her previous wins coming at the Guangzhou Open in 2013 and 2017.

#2023: 5 Titles#

The 2023 season saw a full bloom of Chinese tennis with the rise of a new generation, as five players captured tour titles throughout the year, including veteran Zhu Lin’s triumph in Hua Hin.

Zhu Lin defeated Tesurenko in Hua Hin to claim her first career tour title. Her season goal was to break into the top 50, and winning in Hua Hin allowed her to achieve that target directly.

The other four titles were won by Wu Yibing in Dallas, Zheng Qinwen in Palermo and Zhengzhou, and Wang Xiyu in Guangzhou, all of whom delivered impressive performances during the 2023 season.

#2024: 5 Titles#

The 2024 season was undoubtedly the most exciting year for Chinese tennis fans in recent years, highlighted by Zheng Qinwen’s gold medal in the women’s singles final at the Tokyo Olympics.

On the clay courts of Roland Garros, she delivered unbelievable performances, defeating top players like Kerber and Swiatek to reach the final, then beating Vekic to earn China’s first tennis singles gold medal at the Games, a breakthrough of great significance.

Additionally, Zheng Qinwen successfully defended her Palermo title and won again in Tokyo at the season’s end. The other two titles were claimed by Yuan Yue in Austin and Shang Juncheng in Chengdu.

However, this season many players, including Zheng Qinwen, struggled with injuries and other issues, making 2025 the second year since 2021 in which no Chinese player has won a singles title on the tour.

In the latest singles rankings, Zheng Qinwen, the top active Chinese female player, has dropped to world No. 24. Only Zheng Qinwen, Wang Xinyu, and Zhang Shuai remain in the top 100, while no male player ranks within the top 100, with Bu Yunchaokete leading at No. 112.

We look forward to strong performances from the Chinese team in the brand new 2026 season!(Source: Tennis Home, Author: Barbie)
