Jannik Sinner winning ATP's Most Popular Player award for three consecutive years sparks heated debate, with fans defending Alcaraz.

The ATP recently declared that Italy’s Jannik Sinner has been chosen as the 2025 Most Popular Singles Player, securing this accolade for the third consecutive year. Yet, the news has triggered widespread online debate.

Looking at his achievements, there should be no controversy over Sinner receiving this award. He had an outstanding season, reaching at least the finals in all 12 tournaments he entered, successfully defending his Australian Open title, and defeating his main rival Alcaraz in the Wimbledon final to claim his first Wimbledon championship.

Notably, Sinner’s dominance this season was evident. He posted an impressive 58 wins and only 6 losses, boasting a winning percentage of 90.6%. Towards the end of the season, he demonstrated formidable strength by winning three major titles consecutively: Vienna, the Paris Masters, and the ATP Finals.

However, some fans questioned the results, saying, “This award is for the most popular player, not necessarily the best performer. Even if judged by results, Alcaraz’s achievements are comparable to Sinner’s. Why was Alcaraz excluded?” Some supporters even pointed out that Alcaraz plays with a more aggressive style, attracts larger crowds, and resembles Federer in play, yet he did not win the Most Popular Player award, which they find deeply ironic.

It is reported that this award is decided by fan votes, based on their level of support. In response, some fans accused the ATP of possible behind-the-scenes manipulation, arguing that Sinner, considering doping controversies and fan discussions, is less favored than Alcaraz. Nevertheless, Sinner received the Most Popular Player award, which starkly contrasts with many fans’ perceptions.

Meanwhile, numerous fans also voiced support for Novak Djokovic. Despite experiencing his second season without a Grand Slam title since 2017, the 24-time Grand Slam champion still performed well in the majors. Moreover, the Serbian star’s fan base and event attendance remain remarkable, making it regrettable that he missed out on this award. Some fans commented, “It’s hard to believe that Djokovic, who is followed by autograph seekers everywhere, didn’t win this award even once this year.”

In his acceptance video, Sinner expressed gratitude to his supporters: “Being year-end world No.1 makes me very proud. I want to thank many people—my team, family, friends, and fans. Thank you all for your support and help.”

When asked about winning the Most Popular Player award for three consecutive years, Sinner said, “Winning is important, but tennis is not just about matches and trophies; it’s also about connecting with the fans.” So, what do you think?(Source: Tennis Home, Author: Lu Xiaotian)
