The seven players with the most Australian Open titles in history (ATP & WTA)

With only a month remaining before the 2026 Australian Open begins, multiple top players have the chance to create history: last year’s champion Jannik Sinner is striving to become the second player in the Open Era to achieve a Melbourne three-peat; Carlos Alcaraz is aiming for his first Australian Open victory, which would make him the youngest ever to complete a career Grand Slam; on the women’s court, Iga Swiatek is also pursuing a career Grand Slam, and world No.1 Aryna Sabalenka seeks to regain the title she lost in 2025.

However, none of these players have yet approached the record for most Australian Open titles in history. Below are the seven players with the highest number of championships:

5. Daphne Akhurst: 5 titles

Daphne Akhurst won all five of her Grand Slam singles titles at the Australian Open, with her victories concentrated between 1925 and 1930. She successfully defended her title in 1925 and 1926, was eliminated in the second round in 1927, then went on to secure three consecutive championships from 1928 to 1930, becoming the first female player in tournament history to achieve this feat.

4. Roger Federer, Roy Emerson, Nancy Wynne Bolton: 6 titles each

Roger Federer, Roy Emerson, and Nancy Wynne Bolton share fourth place with six Australian Open titles each. Federer won his first Melbourne crown in 2004, defended it in 2006 and 2007, claimed his fourth title in 2010, ended a nearly five-year Grand Slam drought by defeating Rafael Nadal in 2017, and successfully defended the title again in 2018; Emerson captured his first title in 1961, then won five consecutive championships from 1963 to 1967; Bolton won in 1937 and 1940, completed a three-peat from 1946 to 1948, and earned her sixth title in 1951.

3. Serena Williams: 7 titles

The Australian Open was the last Grand Slam Serena Williams won in her career — after her 2003 victory, she completed a career Grand Slam. She subsequently won again in 2005 and 2007, defended her title in 2009 and 2010; despite fluctuations in later years, she reached the finals three consecutive times from 2015 to 2017, winning twice during that span.

2. Novak Djokovic: 10 titles

Novak Djokovic has won 10 of his 24 Grand Slam titles at the Australian Open, earning him the nickname “King of Melbourne.” He claimed his first Grand Slam in 2008, became the first male player in the Open Era to win three consecutive Australian Open titles from 2011 to 2013; won again in 2015 and 2016; completed a second three-peat from 2019 to 2021; and secured his 10th Australian Open title and 22nd Grand Slam overall in 2023.

1. Margaret Court: 11 titles

Margaret Court shares the record for the most Grand Slam titles in history (male or female) with Djokovic, while holding the Australian Open record with 11 titles. She set an astonishing record of seven consecutive championships from 1960 to 1966, missed the 1967 tournament, returned to reach the final in 1968, then won three more consecutive titles from 1969 to 1971, and claimed her final Australian Open title in 1973, marking her 22nd Grand Slam victory.
