The fruitful seven-year collaboration between Alcaraz and Ferrero has concluded, yet Alcaraz remains under the guidance of Samuel López, a coach at Ferrero’s tennis academy. López frequently stepped in as a temporary coach for Alcaraz when Ferrero was unavailable since 2022, and he formally became part of Alcaraz’s team one year ago.

Alcaraz has been coached by Ferrero since he was 14 and began training at his compatriot’s tennis academy in 2018.
During Ferrero’s tenure as head coach, Alcaraz won 24 singles titles, including six Grand Slam trophies and eight ATP Masters 1000 titles. At the 2022 US Open, the 19-year-old Alcaraz captured his first Grand Slam title, becoming the youngest ATP world No. 1 in history.
Ferrero himself was once ranked world No. 1 and a French Open champion. He earned the ATP Coach of the Year award twice, in 2022 and 2025, marking highlights in his coaching career. When Ferrero won the award in 2022, Novak Djokovic praised him for achieving the highest goals in a different field.
But how exactly has Alcaraz performed in tournaments when his former coach was absent?
Samuel López joined Alcaraz’s team as an assistant coach in December 2024, having previously coached the Spanish star during Ferrero’s absences at various tournaments.

Here is a summary of Alcaraz’s tournament results when Ferrero was not present on the coaching bench.
At the 2022 Miami Open, Alcaraz was coached by López and won his first ATP Masters 1000 title.

Ferrero missed most of the tournament due to his father’s passing but unexpectedly arrived at the venue on the day of the final, where Alcaraz defeated Casper Ruud in straight sets.
After the match, Alcaraz and Ferrero embraced in a deeply emotional celebration.
During Ferrero’s absence at the 2023 Queen’s Club Championships, López coached Alcaraz, who won his first grass-court title by beating Alex de Minaur in straight sets in the final.
Ferrero was unable to accompany Alcaraz to the 2024 Australian Open due to knee surgery recovery.
Under López’s guidance, Alcaraz reached the quarterfinals but lost in four sets to Alexander Zverev.
The 2025 Qatar Open was the first tournament where López accompanied Alcaraz as his sole coach after officially joining the team.
At this Doha ATP 500 event, Alcaraz was defeated in the quarterfinals in three sets by Lehecka.
With Ferrero absent, Alcaraz won his first Monte-Carlo Masters title in this prestigious clay-court tournament in 2025.
Guided by López, Alcaraz defeated Lorenzo Musetti in the final.
At this year’s Cincinnati Masters, Alcaraz was accompanied by López, while Ferrero stayed in Europe until the US Open.
In the final, Yannick Sinner retired while trailing 0-5, handing Alcaraz his first hard-court Cincinnati Masters title.

After winning the US Open, Ferrero did not travel with world No. 1 Alcaraz and López to the 2025 Japan Open.
Alcaraz claimed the title in his debut at this Tokyo ATP 500 event, defeating Taylor Fritz in straight sets in the final.
Since early 2022, in seven tournaments coached by López during Ferrero’s absence, the Spanish star has won five titles and reached the quarterfinals twice.
In these events, Alcaraz’s win-loss record stands at an impressive 33-2 (a 94.3% winning rate), significantly higher than his overall career win rate of 81.2% — although this is based on a relatively small sample size.
