As usual, Novak Djokovic enters a Grand Slam with unwavering determination: to win his 25th Major title and officially surpass the legend Margaret Court. However, Djokovic’s preparation for the 2026 Australian Open has faced several difficulties.
Djokovic decided not to participate in last week’s Adelaide International, missing any competitive matches to warm up for the year’s first Grand Slam. Before the tournament started, Nole showed signs of injury during a practice session with Jiri Lehecka. Off the court, the Grand Slam record holder also attracted attention by choosing to leave the PTPA organization, which he co-founded with Vasek Pospisil.
Djokovic’s opponent in the opening round of this year’s Australian Open, Pedro Martinez, is currently ranked 71st in the world. He is a clay-court specialist, with less impressive results on hard courts in 2025 and only recently recovered from injury at the start of 2026.
Before this Australian Open, Martinez chose the Challenger Tour event in Bengaluru, India to prepare and claimed the title there, ending a streak of 7 consecutive losses late last season.
This will be the first career encounter between Djokovic and Martinez. It is likely that Nole will have a smooth start, especially since the Spanish player has won only 1 out of 14 matches against top 10 opponents.
