Wang Xinyu advances to the quarterfinals in Cluj-Napoca, Zhang Shuai achieves an 11-match winning streak in women's doubles

On February 4th Beijing time, the 2026 WTA250 Cluj-Napoca tournament proceeded with its second round, finalizing all the singles quarterfinalists. The 4th seed and Chinese talent Wang Xinyu won 6-4, 6-2 against Masarova, advancing alongside Yuan Yue into the singles quarterfinals of this tournament.

After a strong performance during the Australian season, Wang Xinyu arrived in Romania maintaining her good form. She breezed through the first round in just one hour, showing excellent serving with no break points conceded throughout the match. In doubles, partnering with Zheng Saisai, she also advanced by winning the deciding match tiebreak. Wang’s singles second-round opponent was Masarova; they had met only once before in 2024, where Masarova won in three sets. In the first set, Wang immediately capitalized on her opponent’s weak service games to break early and led 3-1. After the fifth game, Masarova requested a medical timeout. Although Wang missed a chance to serve out the set at 5-2, she still secured the first set 6-4.

In the second set, Wang once again broke serve early without giving Masarova any chances and sealed the victory with another break at the end, winning 6-2. Together with the previous day’s winner Yuan Yue, Wang reached the quarterfinals of this event. If she goes on to win the title, Wang will achieve a career-high singles ranking (currently 33, with a best of 32).

Elsewhere, at the WTA500 Abu Dhabi tournament, second seeds Zhang Shuai and Bouchard defeated the Kichenok sisters 6-1, 6-4 and will face Ierl and Zeng Limi in the next round. Following this match, Zhang’s doubles winning streak this season has reached 11 consecutive victories, maintaining strong form since winning the Australian Open. In a post-match interview, Zhang said that after winning the Australian Open, she came straight to Abu Dhabi without rest and feels great, fully trusting her partner. “When people heard I was coming straight here, they asked if I’m a machine. I’m not a machine—I really enjoy being here and playing, so I came.”
