Former tennis player exposes anti-doping scandal, condemning the International Tennis Integrity Agency for corruption and injustice

Matosevic, who reached a career-high ranking of 39 globally, openly confessed to employing an illicit blood transfusion technique in 2018 and took this opportunity to accuse the ITIA of conducting corrupt and unjust investigations. Now retired and working as a coach, he detailed the events in a statement and called on tennis players to unite to reform the existing system.

In his statement, Matosevic admitted, “I write this with a heavy heart and a clear mind. Since the 2024 Rome Masters, I have been under investigation by ITIA regarding a banned method I used in February 2018. This is confirmed to be true.” He explained that after facing health issues in 2017, he foolishly and recklessly underwent a blood transfusion in Morelos, Mexico, in February 2018, violating tennis anti-doping regulations.

“I despised myself so much that one week later, at the age of 32 and a half, I retired,” Matosevic wrote. He then spent nearly two years completely away from tennis activities, and three years away from professional tennis, a period during which he deeply reflected on his decisions.

Despite admitting the violation, Matosevic strongly condemned ITIA’s investigative methods, stating that the agency “seized your phone under threatening circumstances and built a legal case based on photos and assumptions extracted from text messages that are actually over five years old.”

“The entire process is corrupt and lacks credibility, as has been evident in recent years!” he angrily wrote in the statement. “These are man-made rules, arbitrarily changed to serve dubious goals; they are neither ethical nor fair!”

Matosevic also mentioned that other conspiracy accusations against him are completely absurd, relying solely on outdated information and fabricated legal interpretations such as intent to piece together a case.

The former tennis player announced he will not attend the scheduled hearing next week, terminating the procedure himself and ceasing all communication with ITIA.

In the final part of his statement, Matosevic made a broader appeal: “Having gone through this process from start to finish and discussed it with others who understand or have had similar experiences, the only logical conclusion is that the current tennis system must be dismantled!”

“Players hold all the power; if they unite, they can bring about real and positive change!” he emphasized.

Matosevic achieved a career-high ranking of world No. 39 and competed in multiple Grand Slam tournaments. He abruptly retired in 2018, at which time the reasons behind his decision were unclear to the public.

The ITIA, as an independent integrity body in tennis, is responsible for investigating doping violations, match-fixing, and other misconduct. In recent years, the agency has faced repeated criticism over its investigative procedures and handling of cases, but such a public and fierce accusation remains rare.

Sports law experts note that incidents like this highlight the tension between athlete rights and investigative authority within anti-doping processes. Balancing the assurance of sports integrity with fair treatment of athletes remains a persistent challenge worldwide.

Matosevic’s statement will undoubtedly spark debate within the tennis community, especially regarding the transparency and fairness of ITIA’s investigations. His call may also encourage more athletes to reflect on their roles and power in sports governance.(Source: Tennis Home, Author: Mei)
