Following the season's inaugural Grand Slam, the tour continues with several tournaments this week, where many Chinese female players are competing. Among these, the WTA500 Abu Dhabi and WTA250 Cluj-Napoca women's events are the most closely watched by fans in China.
Although the Cluj-Napoca tournament is only a WTA250 event, the women's singles draw still features Grand Slam champion-level players. The top seed is former US Open singles champion Raducanu, while Romanian player Cristian is seeded second and anchors the bottom half of the draw.

Chinese player Wang Xinyu entered the singles event as the 4th seed, and Yuan Yue joined at the last moment as a replacement. Both players secured consecutive wins and advanced smoothly into the singles quarterfinals.
However, in the recently concluded quarterfinals, both were unfortunately eliminated. Wang Xinyu was upset by Orlikova with two 4-6 sets. Despite having 23 break point opportunities across the two sets, her break conversion rate was very low, managing only two breaks. Additionally, Wang committed a staggering 60 unforced errors throughout the match, indicating very poor form, which allowed her opponent to reach her first-ever WTA singles semifinal.

In contrast, Yuan Yue's exit was even more heartbreaking. Facing qualifier Snigur, Yuan took the first set 6-4 but was eventually overturned. Notably, Yuan held a match point on her serve in the deciding set but still could not clinch the victory.
Nevertheless, there were some pleasant surprises at this event. Wang Xinyu, paired with Zheng Saisai, triumphed in the semifinals by defeating Cristian/Ruse 6-3, 2-6, 10-5, advancing to the doubles final. This marks the fourth WTA doubles final for the duo, who will face Tolmacheva/Lazimova in the final. Fans are hopeful that the Chinese players can lift the championship trophy this week.

Meanwhile, the higher-level WTA500 Abu Dhabi tournament has also reached its later rounds. Chinese player Zhang Shuai, partnering with Buksha as the 2nd seeded team, was surprisingly defeated in the doubles quarterfinals by the popular pair Iera/Zeng Limi, thus missing out on a semifinal spot.

As one of the hardest-working players in the Chinese contingent, Zhang Shuai's name also appears in the upcoming WTA1000 Doha singles qualifying draw. With her doubles campaign ended, she is now set to compete in Doha. Her first-round qualifying opponent is the experienced Russian veteran Zvonareva. Fans are eagerly hoping Zhang can advance into the main singles draw!(Source: Tennis Home, Author: Barbie)
