Abu Dhabi's Dark Horse Miracle, Veteran Cluj Player Crowned

Last night Beijing time, while 20-year-old Czech youngster Beleck captured her first career trophy at the WTA500 Abu Dhabi event, 35-year-old Romanian veteran Costică secured her fourth career title at the WTA250 Cluj-Napoca tournament with a commanding straight-sets win. Though separated by distance, the same day on the WTA circuit told moving tales of new talent emerging and seasoned players holding firm.

Stories of qualifiers winning titles always captivate. Ranked 101st in the world, Beleck started from the qualifying rounds at the WTA500 Abu Dhabi event, winning seven consecutive matches to ultimately defeat second seed Aleksandrova 7-6(5), 6-1 in the final, completing a remarkable comeback.

“I can hardly believe it,” Beleck said after the match. “From qualifying rounds to champion, this week has felt like a dream.”

This Czech youngster’s victory was no coincidence. She displayed maturity beyond her years — resilient defense, precise counterattacks, and varied tactics during rallies that left opponents struggling. The 525 ranking points and $185,500 prize money are just surface gains; more valuable is the confidence gained and her leap in world ranking from 101st to 38th.

Beleck’s success continues the proud tradition of Czech women’s tennis. From Navratilova to Kvitová, Plíšková to Vondroušová, the Czech Republic consistently produces tennis talents. Beleck’s rise is the latest chapter in this legacy.

For Aleksandrova, this final defeat was undoubtedly bitter. Losing ten consecutive points in the second set and ultimately being outplayed revealed psychological fragility. This marked her fourth consecutive loss in WTA500 singles finals, with an overall record of 1 win and 6 losses.

The Russian player seems caught in a pattern: when underestimated, she advances strongly; but when expectations rise, she often falters at critical moments. This cycle of being defeated just when fans believe she can win has become a career hurdle she must overcome.

Tennis is not only a contest of skills but also a mental battle. Aleksandrova needs to find ways to maintain focus and execute under pressure in upcoming seasons, or her talent may never fully materialize.

On the same day as the Abu Dhabi final, thousands of miles away in Cluj-Napoca, Romania, a very different final unfolded. The 35-year-old veteran Costică swept top seed Raducanu 6-0, 6-2, lifting her fourth career trophy in front of her home crowd.

Costică’s victory showcased the value of experience. Her commanding start, winning eight consecutive games, demonstrated her precise control over the match tempo. For a 35-year-old player, maintaining such competitiveness is itself a triumph.

For Raducanu, this second career final, though a loss, represents an important step on her comeback journey. The 23-year-old British player, who stunned the world with her 2021 US Open title, has since struggled with injuries and inconsistent form.

“I haven’t stood here (at an awards ceremony) in four or five years,” Raducanu said with tears in her eyes, lightly joking. Her words reveal the emotional path of a young prodigy falling from the peak and fighting to return.

The runner-up finish boosts Raducanu’s immediate ranking to 25th as she strives to get back on track. For this young player, reaching the final again is progress and a crucial confidence builder.

On the same day, two finals told two distinct stories from the tennis world. On one side, a 20-year-old rising star soared from qualifier to tour champion, climbing 63 ranking spots and opening a new chapter in her career.

On the other side, a 35-year-old veteran’s persistence and a 23-year-old former Grand Slam champion’s road to recovery were on display. The former proves age is no barrier, as experience and wisdom also bring victories; the latter illustrates the ups and downs and possibilities of rebirth in a career.

Between these extremes lies Aleksandrova, a player in the middle of her career striving to break through barriers. Her struggles remind us that tennis is not just about wins and losses but also about the struggle and growth between them.

From Beleck’s rise, to Costică’s resilience, to Raducanu’s return and Aleksandrova’s fight, these stories together form a complete picture of tennis — it is not only about victory but also about perseverance, growth, setbacks, and renewal.
