French players keep stepping up to challenge the world number one, Alcaraz.

In the early hours today, world number one and Spanish all-rounder Alcaraz won in straight sets against the experienced French player Lindeknech in the first round of the ATP 500 Doha tournament, marking a successful debut since his 2026 Australian Open victory. Tomorrow at 2 a.m., another French player, Rouyer, will follow in challenging Alcaraz in the second round of the Doha event.

Born in May 2001, Rouyer has struggled to make his mark in the fiercely competitive men's tennis scene. Only by receiving a wildcard did he manage to debut in the main draw of a Grand Slam at the 2025 French Open. In 2025, Rouyer secured his first Grand Slam match wins consecutively at Wimbledon and the US Open. At the 2025 Cincinnati and Shanghai Masters, he also achieved his first Masters victories in back-to-back events. At the 2025 ATP 250 Hangzhou tournament, Rouyer reached his first tour final by defeating Russia’s Rublev and American player Renaud-Chan.

Having just broken into the top 60 in the world rankings, Rouyer faces the soaring world number one Alcaraz across the net in the second round of Doha tomorrow early morning — a tremendous honor. Approaching the match with a learning mindset, Rouyer aims to win as many games as possible and should not expect to push the dominant compatriot Lindeknech to a tiebreak like in today’s match.

However, despite his remarkable achievements at the 2026 Australian Open—becoming the youngest male player since the Open Era began in 1968 to win seven Grand Slam titles and the youngest ever to complete a career Grand Slam—Alcaraz cannot afford to underestimate any opponent and must take every match seriously. Moreover, although Alcaraz is currently at his peak with a bright future ahead, he faces some criticism for occasionally losing focus during matches, as if suddenly switching off, showing inconsistency and lack of endurance, especially against lower-ranked players. There is precedent too: Alcaraz has suffered unexpected defeats four times when facing an unfamiliar opponent for the first time in his career. Tomorrow’s second-round match in Doha against French player Rouyer will be their first career meeting, so Alcaraz must not be careless.

In the 2022 ATP 250 Umag final, Alcaraz was surprisingly defeated by Italian rising star Musetti, whom he faced for the first time in his career. At the 2022 Paris Masters third round, Alcaraz unexpectedly lost to French player Gaston, also a first-time opponent. In the 2023 Rome Masters third round, even after regaining the world number one ranking, Alcaraz was upset by Hungarian player Marosan, another first-time adversary. At the 2023 Paris Masters second round, Alcaraz was shockingly eliminated by Russian player Safiullin, again facing a new opponent for the first time.

Having endured these four painful lessons, world number one Alcaraz cannot underestimate lower-ranked players, especially those he has never faced before. Tomorrow at 2 a.m., in the second round of Doha, French players will continue to challenge Alcaraz. Let’s see how Alcaraz responds to Rouyer, an opponent he meets for the first time in his career.
