The reigning SEA Games champion continues to demonstrate remarkable performance on the Tour.
The young Filipino tennis player - Alexandra Eala continues to make waves at the WTA 1000 Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships 2026 by defeating the experienced Sorana Cirstea early morning on 19/2 Vietnam time to secure a spot in the quarterfinals.
Earlier, Eala caused an upset by overcoming world No. 8 Jasmine Paolini with a convincing 2-0 victory. She maintained that momentum in the match against Cirstea, despite the first set being very tense.
The two players battled fiercely until the score was 4-4. Cirstea, using her superior experience, took the lead 5-4 and applied heavy pressure. However, Eala quickly showed resilience by leveling the score, then earning a crucial break to lead 6-5. In the deciding game, the Southeast Asian player stayed focused and closed the first set with an impressive win amid enthusiastic crowd support.
In the second set, Eala started confidently. She broke her opponent’s serve early to lead 1-0 and rapidly extended the lead. When the score reached 4-0 after another break, the match was almost entirely under the control of this young star, who is currently a fascinating phenomenon on the WTA Tour.
Although her opponent fought back later, the reigning SEA Games champion managed to hold onto her advantage to enter the last 8 of the Dubai Championships 2026.
Alexandra Eala’s next challenge will be even tougher as she faces Coco Gauff - the world No. 3 player - in the quarterfinals.
"Whether I win or lose, I still see this as an amazing experience. If I can beat Coco, it will be one of my biggest victories. But the most important thing is gaining more experience.", Eala affirmed.
