Asia's rising star? Iera advances to the women's singles quarterfinals in Dubai!

Chinese supporters have long been recognized as some of the most enthusiastic globally. Yet recently, as Iera has quickly emerged, the energetic and passionate support from Filipino fans during her matches has become very apparent.

Born in May 2005 in the Philippines, Iera started playing tennis at the age of four. At thirteen, she joined the Nadal Tennis Academy for systematic training. By the 2020 season, she began competing in ITF events and won her first junior Grand Slam doubles title at the Australian Open that year.

In the 2022 season, still a minor, Iera captured the girls' singles title at the US Open without dropping a set, becoming the first Filipino player to achieve this feat. The following year, the young Filipino star represented her country at the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, securing valuable bronze medals in both singles and doubles.

Looking at Iera’s overall personal development, her emergence is not a sudden miracle but rather the result of steady and accumulated progress. Of course, as a professional tennis player, gaining broader recognition depends on establishing oneself firmly on the tour.

In 2025, Iera made a striking breakthrough on the tour. In March of that year, she entered the WTA1000 Miami Open with a wildcard and went on a winning streak. She stunned many by defeating Grand Slam champion Swiatek in the quarterfinals, reaching her first tour-level semifinal and becoming only the second wildcard player to beat at least three Grand Slam champions in a single tour event.

Thanks to her standout performances in the 2025 season, Iera quickly broke into the WTA top 100 and earned a nomination for WTA’s Best Newcomer of the Year.

Moving into the 2026 season, Iera continued her steady progress. In this week’s WTA1000 Dubai Open, she consecutively defeated Battistella, Paolini, and Kostyuk, advancing to the quarterfinals of this high-level tournament for the second time in her career.

According to the draw, Iera’s quarterfinal opponent is the American star Gauff. Unbeknownst to many, this Filipino prodigy’s world ranking has climbed to around 30, and she has stepped into the seeded players group at Grand Slam events—a distinction held by only a few active Asian women players like Rybakina, Osaka, Zheng Qinwen, and Wang Xinyu.

As a left-handed player, Iera boasts exceptional speed from the baseline. Additionally, her aggressive returns and consistent forehand winners are key factors in her scoring during matches. Her advancement adds more excitement and talking points to this year’s Dubai tournament, especially amid several player withdrawals.

Finally, here is the detailed lineup of the women’s singles quarterfinals in Dubai this year:
