Doha Night: Sinner’s Stunning Exit, Alcaraz Battles Through to Advance

In the early hours of February 20th Beijing time, the 2026 ATP 500 Doha tournament concluded two headline matches. That night, the Doha courts witnessed contrasting stories: the young Czech talent Menšík shocked the tennis world with an upset, while world No.1 Alcaraz showed a champion’s spirit in adversity, narrowly securing a spot in the semifinals.

The biggest upset came in the quarterfinal clash between Czech youngster Menšík and current world No.2 Sinner. This was their first-ever meeting, and the outcome surprised everyone: Menšík defeated Sinner 7-6(2), 2-6, 6-3 in an upset to power into the semifinals.

Throughout the match, Sinner never managed to find his best form. After losing the first-set tiebreak, the Italian’s physical condition visibly declined. Although he broke twice in the second set and seemed to regain momentum, he inexplicably lost his serve at the start of the deciding set, falling behind. Statistics showed Sinner made an unusually high number of unforced errors today, and his service games were less stable than usual; whenever Menšík earned break points, Sinner struggled to hold serve.

Even more heartbreaking was that Sinner once held a 40-0 lead but failed to convert it into a break. That game turned out to be one of the crucial turning points of the match.

With this victory, 20-year-old Menšík set an impressive record: he is the first player ranked outside the top ten since 2023 to earn match points on hard courts and ultimately defeat Sinner. In the semifinals, the Czech rising star will face Fucsovics for a place in the final.

In a post-match interview, the young Czech appeared both humble and resolute: “Before the match, I was fully aware of Yannick’s strength; he’s a great champion. But still, I went out there to win and kept a mindset focused on victory.” He also revealed that after a dip in form in the second set, a break in the restroom helped him regain concentration, especially improving his serve. “It was a very tough mental battle, and I’m proud of myself.”

In contrast to Sinner’s unexpected exit, world No.1 Alcaraz’s path to the semifinals was equally challenging. Facing Russian veteran Khachanov, the Spanish star came back from behind to win 6-7(6), 6-4, 6-3, advancing to the last four in Doha.

In the first set, Alcaraz had break points but failed to convert, eventually losing the tiebreak to Khachanov. However, the world No.1 stayed composed, gradually raising his level from the second set onward and winning the next two sets to complete the comeback.

“I have to say it was a very intense battle,” Alcaraz admitted after the match. “I missed many chances in the first set, and Khachanov played really well then. But I knew my opportunities would come. I just needed to keep fighting and stay patient, waiting for my moment, and when it appeared, I tried to seize it. I’m very proud of how I fought today.”

Next, Alcaraz will face defending champion Rublev in the semifinals. Rublev earlier eliminated Greek star Tsitsipas in straight sets in his quarterfinal match.

That night in Doha witnessed both a major upset and the resilience of a champion. For 20-year-old Menšík, defeating Sinner is undoubtedly the most significant victory of his career since beating Djokovic in Miami last year; for Alcaraz, this comeback might be the first true test on his path to defending the title.(Source: Tennis Home Author: Mei)
