ATP Tournament Update: Wu Yibing Wins Tiebreak Against Ruud, Zverev Starts Strong in Acapulco

On Tuesday evening at the Acapulco tournament in Mexico, Chinese player Wu Yibing, entering as a qualifier, caused an upset by winning two flawless tiebreaks to beat the No. 3 seed Casper Ruud 7-6(2), 7-6(1), securing his third career victory against a top-20 player.

Previously, Wu Yibing defeated Taylor Fritz in 2023 and Daniel Medvedev last September. In this match, he maintained an aggressive style, committing zero errors in both tiebreaks and firmly controlling the pace of the match. Afterward, Wu said he stayed calm under Ruud’s strong pressure, balancing patience with proactive offense to clinch the crucial win.

Statistics show Wu’s first serve success rate was 62%. Although Ruud applied heavy pressure on the second serve, Wu was broken only once during the match, with a mutual break in the middle of the second set. Making his Acapulco debut, Wu now holds a 1-0 record at this event and leads his ATP head-to-head against Ruud 1-0.

On the same day, German star Alexander Zverev made his first appearance since the Australian Open, also starting strong in Acapulco. As the top seed and 2021 champion, Zverev defeated French player Corentin Moutet 6-2, 6-4 without facing a single break point, achieving a first-serve percentage and first-serve points won rate of 79% each.

Zverev admitted that returning to competition after a long break and facing an opponent like Moutet was challenging, but he was very pleased with his performance. With this win, Zverev’s Acapulco record improves to 15-5, tying Rafael Nadal for the most victories since the event switched to hard courts in 2014; he also surpassed Ferrer with 117 ATP 500 wins, ranking second in the tournament series history behind Nadal’s 121 wins.

Wu Yibing will face another qualifier, Japanese player Shintaro Mochizuki, in the second round, after defeating French veteran Adrian Mannarino in the first round. Zverev is set to play against Kecmanovic.
