It is widely recognized that every tennis event features both main draws and qualifiers. Typically, players in the qualifiers rank lower and have less strength compared to those who qualify directly by their world ranking, so defeating them isn’t easy. Likewise, performing well in the main draw is difficult.

Nevertheless, exceptions do exist. Just yesterday, several players who advanced from the qualifiers at the WTA250 Austin tournament achieved impressive results in the first round. So, who are these players? And what results did they achieve? Today, this article will take you through their stories.

From the Australian Open qualifiers this year, Czech player Bartonkova fought through a tough three-set battle in the first round of the main draw to defeat Australian Kasatkina and advance. In the second round, she again battled through three sets to overcome Swiss player Bencic, an Olympic champion, causing a huge upset and reaching the Grand Slam last 32 for the first time in her career.

However, despite these achievements, Bartonkova’s world ranking still remains well outside the top 100, so this week she had to start from the WTA250 Austin qualifiers. There, she consecutively defeated Russia’s Tkachova and America’s Zhilko to qualify for the main draw.

In the first round of the main draw, Bartonkova won against American player Voronezh, who had previously reached the Grand Slam last 32, with a score of 6-4, 7-5, marking her third victory on the 2026 tour.

Back in 2016, Spanish player Masarova won the French Open junior title. Since then, she has improved every year. In early February, Masarova was swept out by Chinese player Wang Xinyu at the WTA250 Cluj-Napoca event.

This week, Masarova won two consecutive matches in the WTA250 Austin qualifiers to reach the main draw. In the first round, she played like a different player compared to her time in Romania, defeating China’s number two Wang Xinyu 6-3, 6-2 in a stunning upset, allowing Wang only five games throughout the match, avenging her previous loss. Meanwhile, Wang Xinyu, after reaching her career-high top 30 ranking, experienced her first first-round exit in the 2026 season.

Two American players, Osuigwe and Mandlik, both qualified for the main draw through the WTA250 Austin qualifiers, and were drawn against each other in the first round. Osuigwe, who won the 2017 French Open junior title, lost the first set 2-6 but came back strongly to win the next two sets 6-3, 6-1, completing the third victory for qualifiers on the opening day of the WTA250 Austin. These three wins proved that qualifiers also have their moment in the spotlight. That’s today’s tennis story, with more to come tomorrow.(Source: Tennis Home, Author: Yixin Jushi)
