Yuan Yue Extends Winning Streak in Austin, Zhang Shuai to Challenge Navarro Tomorrow Morning in Merida

On February 26th Beijing time, the WTA250 Austin tournament held its second round of women's singles. Chinese player Yuan Yue defeated Hungarian player Gálfi in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 to advance to the quarterfinals, with her current ranking rising to No.120. Her quarterfinal opponent will be decided between local players Krug and Zakharova.

Yuan Yue

Yuan Yue was stopped in the final round of singles qualifying at this event, but due to the withdrawal of top seed Pegula, she entered the main draw as a lucky loser. In the first round, she saved three match points to come back against Schramokova. After a tough three-set match yesterday, Yuan maintained her form today, taking the first set 6-3 with a crucial break in the fourth game. She played even stronger in the second set, breaking serve consecutively in the third and fifth games to lead 5-1. Although she squandered two match points in her first service game to close the match and got broken, she immediately broke back in the next game to seal the victory 6-2.

Aside from the No.2 seed Jovic (currently ranked No.18 in the world), the overall rankings of participants in this tournament are relatively low. It is hoped that Yuan Yue, who has had outstanding results here before (2024 singles champion, 2025 doubles champion), can seize the opportunity to achieve a strong performance.

The Chinese doubles team of Wang Xinyu and Zheng Saisai lost in the first round 3-6, 4-6 to Sherekhmetyeva and Zakharova. Wang Xinyu was eliminated in both singles and doubles in this event and will next compete at the WTA1000 Indian Wells tournament.

In other matches, wildcard entrants Venus Williams and Stearns teamed up but were defeated 2-6, 6-7(5) by top seeds Hunter and Townsend. Townsend earned two wins in one day, having previously beaten qualifier Batukova 6-1, 6-4 in the singles second round. She will face another qualifier, Masarova, in the quarterfinals, who defeated Osgood 7-6(2), 6-3.

At the WTA500 Merida tournament, the women's singles second round also took place. Buzkova advanced to the quarterfinals after her opponent Arango retired when trailing 6-2, 1-6, 0-2. Kasintseva came back from a 5-7, 6-7(5) deficit to defeat the 8th seed Rinnet 7-5, and now awaits the winner between Zhang Shuai and Navarro. Their match is scheduled for about 9:30 AM Beijing time tomorrow.

The Chinese pair Guo Hanyu and Meladnovich, seeded third, were surprisingly knocked out in the first round after losing 4-6, 1-6 to Kempen and Gleeson. They will continue to partner at the upcoming WTA1000 Indian Wells event. The Chinese duo Tang Qianhui and Xu Yifan advanced directly to the doubles quarterfinals after their opponents Arango and Semenz retired.
