Zverev stumbles in Acapulco, risks dropping out of ATP top 5.

Not only Zverev, other leading players have also been eliminated from the Mexican Open this year.

Alexander Zverev's inconsistent form continues as the German player makes an early exit at the Mexican Open 2026. This defeat not only marks another missed opportunity for a title but also puts him at risk of a significant drop in the ATP rankings after nearly two years maintaining a top 4 position.

In the second round of the ATP 500 Mexican Open in Acapulco, Zverev lost to Miomir Kecmanovic with a score of 3-6, 7-6(7-3), 6-7(4-7) after a prolonged and intense match. This marks Kecmanovic's first career victory over a top 5 player.

Meanwhile, Zverev continues to show instability at a tournament that once brought him glory. In 2021, the German player triumphed by defeating Taylor Fritz in the final. However, since then, he has mostly left behind forgettable memories.

In 2022, Zverev was disqualified from the tournament following a controversial incident during his doubles match with Marcelo Melo. After winning his first round, he was defaulted for abusive behavior and hitting the umpire's chair with his racket. Sascha was absent in 2023, then suffered early exits in the 2024, 2025, and now 2026 seasons.

As a result, his ATP ranking position is seriously threatened. Since March 2024, Zverev has consistently been in the top 5, but with his current 4,555 points, his lead over the chasing pack is slim. Lorenzo Musetti (4,405 points), Alex de Minaur (4,235), Fritz (4,220), Ben Shelton (4,010), and Felix Auger-Aliassime (3,850) are all applying significant pressure.

Notably, Auger-Aliassime still has an opportunity to increase his points if he performs well at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships 2026, potentially rising to the 6th position. With the Indian Wells Open approaching, Alexander Zverev must quickly regain his form if he wants to avoid witnessing his steepest fall in two years.
