WTA Merida: Zhang Shuai Defeats Defending Champion Navarro to Advance to Quarterfinals

On February 27, Beijing time, during the second round of the WTA 500 Merida event, Chinese tennis player Zhang Shuai triumphed over the second seed and defending champion Navarro, 6-4, 6-4. This win extends her streak against Navarro to three matches and propels her into the tournament's quarterfinals, where she is set to compete against Kasatkina.

This match represented the third duel between the two athletes. Zhang Shuai had emerged victorious in their prior two clashes (2024 China Open, 2025 Wuhan Open). Starting from the qualifying rounds in this tournament, Zhang has advanced without dropping a single set, demonstrating excellent form.

In the opening set, Navarro took an early lead by breaking serve and quickly built a 4-1 game advantage. However, the 37-year-old Zhang displayed remarkable resilience. Capitalizing on Navarro's reduced mobility following recent muscle gain and weight increase, Zhang consistently created angles to move her opponent around. After saving six break points in the seventh game, Zhang finally secured a break back. She went on to win five consecutive games, taking the first set 6-4. The second set followed a similar pattern: Navarro broke serve first, but Zhang responded more swiftly this time, breaking back and overtaking the score. She ultimately sealed the set 6-4, halting her opponent's title defense and claiming another victory against a Top 20 player.

In a post-match interview, Zhang Shuai revealed that a coach's error led to her initial main draw entry being withdrawn, forcing her to start from the qualifiers. She remarked that this mishap unexpectedly worked in her favor, as the consecutive matches helped her find peak condition. "This mistake turned out to be quite lucky for me!" When the host mentioned that it had been 16 years since Zhang last reached a tour-level quarterfinal, she calmly responded, "Really? I hadn't noticed. I just focus on playing my matches and on my own game!"

In other singles matches played today, wildcard entry and top seed Paolini defeated lucky loser Han Tianyu 6-0, 6-2. She will face the in-form British player Boulter in the quarterfinals. Turkish player Sonmez came from behind to beat the No. 3 seed Jijin Li 3-6, 7-6(7), 6-4, while Frech secured a 6-0, 6-3 win over Spanish player Manero.
