WTA Merida: Zhang Shuai Reaches First 500-Level Semifinal in Four Years

On February 28, Beijing time, in the WTA 500 Merida quarterfinals, Chinese player Zhang Shuai defeated the post-05 generation rising star Karsynkova 6-1, 6-3, advancing to her 20th career semifinal and her first in four years (since Tokyo 2022).

Since entering the Merida main draw, Karsynkova was Zhang Shuai's third consecutive left-handed opponent. Therefore, although this match was their first encounter, Zhang quickly found her rhythm, secured an early break, and steadily extended her lead, taking the first set 6-1. Early in the second set, breaks were exchanged and the match became balanced. However, Zhang demonstrated strong baseline consistency. Facing an opponent 17 years her junior, she avoided lengthy rallies with precise placement and effective court movement, ultimately winning the set 6-3 to seal the victory.

In the post-match interview, Zhang Shuai stated that her opponent played well today, and the victory relied not only on experience but also on physical stamina. She emphasized her efforts to improve the quality of every shot. She noted the excellent tennis atmosphere in Mexico, which has motivated her, and expressed gratitude for the support from the fans present.

This marks Zhang Shuai's 20th tour-level semifinal and her third at the 500 level, following Tokyo 2022 and Birmingham 2014. After reaching the semifinals, Zhang's live singles ranking has risen to No. 62. At 37 years old, Zhang Shuai is truly enjoying her tennis. While we hope she can progress further, we also salute her passion and perseverance.

With this, all quarterfinal matches at the Merida event are concluded. Top seed Paolini reversed Bolt 0-6, 6-3, 6-3 and will face Bucșa in the semifinals, who won both her singles and doubles matches on the day. Bucșa defeated Turkish player Sönez 6-3, 6-4 in singles and, partnering Chinese player Jiang Xinyu, advanced to the doubles final. Zhang Shuai's semifinal opponent will be Polish player Fryczy, who eliminated fourth seed Buzkova. Zhang leads their head-to-head 2-1, with their last meeting at the 2024 China Open where Zhang won 6-4, 6-2.

In other matches, at the WTA 250 Austin quarterfinals, Yuan Yue lost to American player Krueger 6-7(5), 4-6, ending her run in the quarterfinals. However, as a lucky loser, Yuan achieved her best result at this tournament. Austin has been a favorable venue for Yuan, and her performance this week was commendable. We look forward to even better results from her in the future.
