On February 28, local time, the women's singles semifinals of the 2026 WTA 500 Merida event were held. China's Zhang Shuai saved four match points in the second set during a fierce 2-hour 34-minute contest, yet was defeated 2-6, 7-6(6), 3-6 by Frech, failing to advance to her maiden WTA 500 singles final.

Zhang Shuai
Zhang Shuai's best result at this tournament level is the semifinals, having reached the last four twice before—in Birmingham 2014 (losing to Ivanovic) and Tokyo 2022 (losing to Samsonova). For Frech, Mexico has been a fortunate place; she claimed her first career title at the WTA 500 Guadalajara event in 2024.
In their previous encounters, Zhang Shuai held a 2-1 lead. In this match, Frech seized the initiative in the first set with two breaks of serve, winning it 6-2 in 41 minutes. In the second set, Zhang shook off the first-set loss and took a 4-2 lead. Frech then mounted a comeback, winning three consecutive games and earning two match points at 40-15 on Zhang's serve, but failed to convert either. The set went to a tiebreak where Zhang faced another match point at 4-6, but she saved it with four consecutive winners to take it 7-6(6). In the deciding set, both players exchanged breaks in the first four games. Although Zhang held serve first in the fifth game, Frech proved more clutch on key points in the subsequent games, winning four straight to seal the match 6-3.
Frech said after the match: "It was such a tough battle with so many twists and turns. Zhang played incredibly well, saving match points with winners in the second set. I just tried to stay calm, though I was getting a bit tired. Some of my best career memories have been made in Mexico, and I've felt tremendous support from the fans here." In the final, Frech will face Bucșa, who defeated top seed Paolini 7-5, 6-4.
In this tournament, Zhang Shuai started from the qualifying rounds and defeated several strong opponents to reach the semifinals again, matching her personal best result at a WTA 500 event. By earning 220 ranking points and $66,003 in prize money, her live ranking has risen to No.61. As Zhang did not compete in last year's North American Sunshine Double, her excellent form and lack of points to defend this year position her well to further climb the world rankings.
In women's doubles, the Chinese pair Tang Qianhui/Xu Yifan lost 5-7, 5-7 to Havlag/Lumsden, failing to advance to the final. The latter will face the No.2 seeds Jiang Xinyuan/Bucșa for the title tomorrow.
