Daniil Medvedev is exploring all avenues to leave the Middle East safely so he can head to the United States and get ready for Indian Wells.
Daniil Medvedev officially clinched the Dubai Tennis Championships 2026 on the evening of February 28th Vietnam time, yet the conclusion of this year's tournament unfolded in an unexpected manner. His opponent in the final— Tallon Griekspoor —was forced to withdraw due to injury, thereby allowing "Meddy" to claim the title without shedding a single drop of sweat.
Prior to this, Griekspoor had an impressive run to reach his first ATP 500 final, but accumulated physical issues prevented the Dutch player from taking the court for the championship match. In the semifinals, he had to push himself hard to overcome Andrey Rublev in two tense sets. Immediately after the match, the Dutch player admitted he could barely walk and felt a serious problem in his hamstring area following a landing.
"This is not the way I wanted to win the final. Hope @Griekii's injury isn't too serious and wish him a speedy recovery.", Medvedev shared on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), showing respect for his opponent.
This marks the first time Medvedev has won an ATP Tour title twice in his career, having previously set an unprecedented record by claiming 22 titles in 22 different cities worldwide. However, the former world number one's joy was not complete because...
...the backdrop of the final day of this year's Dubai Tennis Championships became particularly unusual as the Middle East region plunged into tension following serious military developments. Attacks and retaliations among involved parties have affected several countries in the region, including the UAE. While Abu Dhabi felt more pronounced impacts, Dubai—the host city of the tournament—also experienced a degree of instability.
The organizers still endeavored to maintain the competition schedule, even proceeding with the doubles final as planned. However, the biggest challenge arose from travel issues, as all flights departing Dubai were suspended until further notice. Medvedev's team is working to arrange his prompt departure from the Middle East to prepare for the ATP 1000 Indian Wells tournament held in California, USA.
Fortunately for the Russian player, he has a first-round bye and will only start playing from the second round next weekend. Nevertheless, these off-court disruptions will undoubtedly affect the Dubai champion's preparation to some extent ahead of this important Masters 1000 event.
