Townsend's post-match retort to critics sparks online discontent, while Medvedev, stranded in Dubai, posts update to assure safety.

At the WTA250 Austin event, American player Townsend defeated Krueger 7-6(6), 6-3, advancing to her first career tour-level singles final. However, more than this hard-fought victory, her post-match remarks—seen by many as a veiled "clapback"—have ignited a fresh wave of criticism among Chinese tennis fans.

During the on-court interview, Townsend first expressed pride in making history: "I'm incredibly proud to have my name in the history books. I'm writing my own legacy, in my own way." But then she abruptly shifted tone, aiming her words at past critics: "All the people who had anything bad to say about me have to eat their words now. I'm still standing, right here, not going anywhere. And it's only going to get better from here, so they better buckle up."

This provocative and defiant declaration inevitably reminds people of her controversial past during the Billie Jean King Cup in Shenzhen in September 2025.

At that time, Townsend posted multiple videos on social media, arrogantly criticizing the Chinese cuisine provided at the tournament hotel. Faced with local delicacies like braised turtle with fish maw and dry pot frog, she sarcastically remarked she'd "give it a 2 out of 10," her tone dripping with disdain for the foreign culinary culture. This quickly enraged Chinese netizens. Under public pressure, she eventually posted an apology video overnight, calling her comments "inexcusable and weak."

Now, half a year later, far from showing reflection on her past ignorant behavior, Townsend seems eager to tell her critics to "eat their words" after a modest achievement, thoroughly angering netizens who had previously chosen to forgive or move on.

"Eat their words? She should first swallow every single word she said criticizing Chinese food! Our profound and extensive culinary culture doesn't deserve a '2' from her," one netizen angrily commented.

Another added, "She was happy to earn points and prize money in Shenzhen while looking down on the local food. Now she gets carried away after just winning a semi-final at a 250-level tournament. Where does this confidence come from? This 'legacy' seems pretty hollow."

International fans also expressed frustration: "Her so-called 'people who had anything bad to say' likely refers to the Chinese netizens who criticized her discriminatory remarks. This girl lacks emotional intelligence and holds a grudge. She cries when she loses and tells netizens to 'buckle up' when she wins—so dramatic." Others agreed, "She pretended to be remorseful when apologizing, but her true colors show as soon as she reaches a final. She should learn the meaning of 'respect' before talking about 'writing a legacy.'"

Netizens pointed out sharply that while athletic performance matters in sports, basic courtesy and cultural respect are equally fundamental. "Her perseverance as a mother and athlete on court is admirable. But trying to profit in China while showing contempt for everything here—this two-faced approach means she'll never win people's hearts."

In contrast to Townsend's confrontational stance, Daniil Medvedev in Dubai demonstrated the composure and resignation of a top athlete facing an unexpected crisis.

Medvedev, who won the Dubai title after his opponent withdrew, had little time to celebrate before being stranded at his hotel due to closed airspace amid escalating US-Iran tensions. He calmly described the situation in an interview: "Of course, the situation is very unusual. The only thing that happened is the airport is closed, and nobody knows when we can leave. Other than that, it's just waiting."

Medvedev even humorously noted that his on-court emotionality might help him in life: "It might sound strange, but even though I'm emotional on court, that emotionality might help me in life sometimes. So for me, everything is still normal for now."

Compared to the uproar surrounding Townsend, netizens reacted to Medvedev's plight with more sympathy and lighthearted jokes: "Medvedev got 'sealed' in Dubai by his champion's trophy," and "Hope the situation eases soon so this straightforward guy can leave safely to compete." Many also reflected that when facing adversity, some choose silent patience, while others choose to provoke public sentiment further.

For Townsend, she has written a new chapter in her career in Austin and is poised to challenge for her first title. But before that, she might need to consider whether her bold statement telling critics to "eat their words" is meant to motivate herself or to pay for her past ignorance. After all, a true legacy requires not only victories on the court but also a heart that understands respect and humility off it. On that front, she still has a long way to go.(Source: Tennis Home, Author: Lu Xiaotian)
