Raducanu expresses reluctance to be dictated to in her search for a coach.

On March 7, Beijing time, the second round of women's singles at the 2026 WTA 1000 Indian Wells tournament commenced. The 25th seed, British star Emma Raducanu, delivered an outstanding performance, sweeping past Russian qualifier Zakharova with a score of 6-1, 6-3 in just 1 hour and 16 minutes, advancing strongly into the women's singles round of 32.

In this match, Raducanu displayed excellent competitive form. In the first set, she completely controlled the match with sharp attacks and stable serves, breaking her opponent twice to take the set 6-1. In the second set, Zakharova's form improved somewhat, but she still showed immaturity in handling crucial points. Raducanu achieved a key break in the middle stages and ultimately sealed the victory 6-3. In the next round, Raducanu will await the winner between Anisimova and Blinkova.

At the post-match press conference, the former US Open champion opened up about her most sensitive topic currently—finding a new head coach. Her remarks were candid and direct, revealing that after experiencing the ups and downs of professional tennis, this 23-year-old player has developed clearer thinking and determination regarding her career path.

“I really want to find a coach who works well with me,” Raducanu stated at the beginning of the press conference, but then shifted tone to point out the practical difficulty: “But I don’t think it will be easy to find someone who perfectly meets all the requirements.”

These words were not without basis. Since her stunning breakthrough at Flushing Meadows in 2021, Raducanu’s coaching team has changed frequently, and her collaborations with several renowned coaches have not lasted long. This turbulent experience has clearly made her exceptionally cautious about her next choice. She frankly expressed her desire for genuine collaboration and resonance, rather than unilateral command.

“I’m definitely open to it (hiring a coach). But I just hope no one comes and tells me ‘let’s do this,’ and I disagree but have to follow.” Raducanu’s statement carried a note of firmness. “Many people tell me what to do, how to play, but those things might not suit me. So, I want to return to my natural way of playing.”

This statement undoubtedly reflects a deep reflection on her past experiences. Under immense success and subsequent pressure, the young player might have lost herself amidst external voices, trying to reshape herself according to others' blueprints. Now, she is determined to reclaim her original approach. Yet she also soberly recognizes that change is not instantaneous: “It takes time to relearn that way of playing, because it’s something I was taught to somewhat abandon.”

Moreover, Raducanu seems to have developed a new understanding of the role of a coach. She does not wish to be bound by a traditional contract.

“I don’t necessarily want to hire just one coach for this position, because anyone I recruit would immediately be on trial. I might feel obligated to keep them, even if it’s not necessarily the right decision.” Her words reveal a maturity beyond her age and an absolute control over her career path. She worries that personal relationships or contractual obligations could interfere with purely competitive judgments, leading to suboptimal choices.

Currently, the coach accompanying her is Mark Petchey. Regarding the current collaboration, Raducanu gave positive feedback but also hinted at future flexibility: “It has worked well so far, but I will definitely seek help from some people here and there.”

This seems to paint a picture of the future: Raducanu may lean more towards a advisory-style support system, seeking guidance from different experts at various stages and for different issues, rather than entrusting all trust and decision-making power to a single authority.

“I really want a coach who works well with me, but I think it’s hard to find a perfect person.” At the end of the press conference, she reiterated this point. This is not pessimism but a clear recognition based on reality. In the fiercely competitive and unpredictable world of professional tennis, finding a perfect partner who understands her unique growth trajectory, aligns with her thinking, and helps her return to her natural style of play is indeed extremely difficult.

For Raducanu, the first victory at Indian Wells is just a beginning. On the equally challenging path of finding a coach, she is proceeding at her own pace, cautiously seeking a companion who can fight alongside her without trying to dictate to her. Perhaps, before fully rediscovering her natural self, she prefers to leave the coaching position temporarily vacant rather than being dictated to again.(Source: Tennis Home Author: Mei)
