Rybakina's Mixed Doubles Victory Marred by Award Ceremony "Inappropriate Touch," Fans Demand WTA Explanation

Who could believe it! At the Indian Wells tennis tournament mixed doubles event, Rybakina and Fritz should have been enjoying the joy of just lifting the championship trophy, but their mood was overshadowed by a disgusting incident during the award ceremony.

On March 6, the newly crowned Australian Open champion Rybakina partnered with American star Fritz to win the charity mixed doubles championship of this tournament, taking home a $200,000 prize. This should have been a shining moment belonging to tennis and victory, yet during the subsequent award photo session, an unexpected incident occurred.

At that time, the guest presenting the award to the champion pair was David Renker, Senior Vice President of Eisenhower Health Center. However, from the on-site video, it can be seen that this gray-haired executive, while posing for a photo with Rybakina, placed his hand, which should have maintained a polite distance, on Rybakina's back and gradually moved it downward, eventually stopping at an inappropriate position on her buttocks.

Faced with this sudden offense, Rybakina did not choose to loudly reprimand and make the situation awkward, but instead used action to convey her clearest stance.

The 26-year-old tennis "Ice Queen" kept smiling without changing her expression, but her hand quietly reached behind her, firmly and unequivocally gently pushing Renker's hand away. After pushing it away, Rybakina even glanced sideways at him with a meaningful look, her eyes containing both surprise and warning. This series of actions flowed smoothly, both maintaining the decorum of the award ceremony and clearly drawing a line without ambiguity.

In contrast, Renker, after being pushed away, appeared somewhat unnatural, immediately stepping back half a step, trying to cover up the awkwardness. The mixed doubles partner Fritz beside him seemed not to notice this detail, still focused on the trophy in his hands.

Although Rybakina maintained great restraint and calmness, this scene was fully captured by the camera and continued to ferment online, instantly igniting the anger of global fans.

Related videos were widely circulated on social media, with netizens leaving comments condemning this disrespectful behavior and sympathizing with Rybakina's restraint. One angry netizen commented: "Seeing this old man touch Rybakina makes me sick. WTA, what are you going to do? Why not apologize?"

Another netizen expressed dissatisfaction with the silence of relevant organizations in protecting female athletes: "Where are WTA, Pam Shriver, and other commentators now? They claim to care about Rybakina, but this old guy was clearly touching her inappropriately."

Another netizen analyzed from a body language perspective: "So ironic, knowing that March 8 is International Women's Day, yet shortly before such a holiday, a top WTA female player encountered such an incident, truly a disgrace to women. It's too awkward watching through the screen, completely crossing boundaries. I think no one should hug around the waist, putting hands on shoulders is enough, regardless of gender." More radical fans directly called out: "This guy should be fired!"

Up to now, the tournament organizers and the involved person David Renker himself have not made a public response to this incident. With the ongoing fermentation of public opinion, there is widespread external attention on whether WTA will investigate this matter and provide an explanation, many netizens spontaneously went to WTA's official website to leave comments demanding an explanation!

In the upcoming Indian Wells singles main draw, Rybakina, as a former champion, will continue her campaign. Hopefully, this off-court controversy will not affect her performance on the court, and also hope that all female athletes can enjoy their moments of glory in an environment free from violation.(Source: Tennis Home Author: Lu Xiaotian)
