Sinner closes in on Alcaraz, Vietnamese-origin player nears historic milestone on ATP rankings

Carlos Alcaraz remains the world number one, yet the distance separating him from Jannik Sinner has been considerably reduced. At the same time, the young American tennis player Learner Tien is nearing the landmark of making his debut in the global top 20 on the most recent ATP standings.

After consecutively winning two major titles early in the season at the Australian Open and Qatar Open, Alcaraz entered Indian Wells as the brightest contender for his third championship this year. The Spanish player maintained an unbeaten streak since the start of the season, but that run was halted in the semifinals when he fell to Daniil Medvedev.

However, Medvedev also could not seize the opportunity to claim the top spot. In the final, the Russian player lost to Sinner after two tense tie-break sets with scores of 6–7 (6–8), 6–7 (4–7). This victory earned Sinner 1,000 crucial bonus points because he had no points to defend from last year's tournament.

Jannik Sinner vô địch Indian Wells Masters 2026, rút ngắn đáng kể khoảng cách với Alcaraz trên BXH ATP mới nhất

Jannik Sinner wins the Indian Wells Masters 2026, significantly narrowing the gap with Alcaraz on the latest ATP rankings

The reason is that Sinner missed last year's Indian Wells due to a doping-related suspension. Consequently, the Italian player increased his total ranking points to 11,400. The gap between him and Alcaraz is now only 2,150 points, although these two young players still lead the rest of the men's tennis field by a considerable margin.

In third place, Novak Djokovic remains more than 6,000 points behind Sinner, while Alexander Zverev holds fourth position with an additional 465-point gap behind Djokovic. The top 10 rankings also recorded some notable changes. Felix Auger-Aliassime moved up one spot to number 8, pushing Ben Shelton down to 9th. Medvedev, after reaching the Indian Wells final, returned to the top 10, while Alexander Bublik was the one to exit this group.

The world top 20 also welcomed a new face, Luciano Darderi, as the Italian player climbed three places to his career-high ranking – 18th. Meanwhile, Learner Tien edged closer to a historic milestone by rising six spots to position 21 after reaching the quarterfinals in California.

The latest ATP rankings show significant notable fluctuations

British player Cameron Norrie also made considerable progress, advancing 5 places thanks to his quarterfinal achievement. This result helped him reclaim the position of Britain's number one player, while his compatriot Jack Draper dropped 12 spots to rank 26 after failing to defend his title at Indian Wells.

Another name attracting attention is Holger Rune, as the Danish player fell 10 places due to injury and now ranks two positions behind Draper. Perhaps the most disappointing is Tsitsipas. The former world number 3 continues to plummet, dropping another 8 spots to rank 51 – marking the first time since April 2018 that he has been pushed out of the ATP top 50.

Furthermore, the rankings witnessed notable leaps by several young players. Ethan Quinn rose 17 places to rank 57, Mariano Navone climbed 18 spots to rank 61. Other players such as Mattia Bellucci (+17, rank 77), Sebastian Ofner (+22, rank 86), and Rinky Hijikata (+19, rank 98) also made strong advances following impressive recent results.
