WTA Austin: Kvitova lost her comeback debut, and Wei Sijia stopped in the first round

Wei Sijia won two consecutive matches in this Austin tournament to break through from the qualifying round, and immediately rose to No.115 in the rankings, and has now entered the women's singles main draw of the WTA1000 Indian Wells station.

Elsewhere, top seed Pegula received a retirement gift from Ruth to advance to the second round when he led 6-3, 3-2. Second seed Schneider defeated qualifier Prozolova 0-6, 6-2, 7-5 after swallowing an egg in the first set and falling behind 1-4 in the deciding set. Third seed Stearns lost 2-6, 3-6 to Gracheva.


Zhang Shuai and Yuan Yue won the Women's Doubles, with Yuan Yue/Blinkova beating top seeds Buxa/Miki Kato 7-6(5), 6-4, and Zhang Shuai/Kessler beating local pair Mandrick/McNally 6-3, 6-0 to advance to the Women's Doubles quarter-finals.
