In the men's singles first round of the ATP 500 Acapulco men's singles, China's Buyun Chaokert wasted serve in the second set to win the match, and was defeated by American Mickelson 6-2/6-7(5)/6-7(5), losing for the third time after last year's Shanghai Masters and Metz. Top seed Zverev defeated Italy's Ignadi Anardi 6-7(2), 6-3, 6-4 as the German opted to compete on clay in South America over the past two weeks and got off to a hard-fought start against 19-year-old American rising star Lerner Money, who knocked out Britain's Norrie 7-6(5)/6-3. Wildcard 19-year-old homegrown teenager and former junior world No. 1 Mendes defeated Vukic 7-5, 4-6, 7-6(4) to claim his first ATP Tour victory, becoming the youngest Mexican player to win a Tour since Hernandez (Santiago) in 1996, where he will face second seed Ruud in the second round. Spain's Davidovich Fokina saved four match points to beat Bellucci 1-6, 7-6(6), 6-2 to set up a second-round tie with seventh seed Tiafoe, who beat France's Miller 6-4, 6-2.
