The Women's Tennis Association (WTA) recently undertook a major rebranding initiative with the launch of a new logo to symbolize the "new era" of women's tennis.
However, well-known players Mladenovic and Tara Moore expressed disappointment with the design of the new logo and the need for this change, and criticized the WTA for spending a lot of money on it, which is not a necessary expense.
The brand update significantly removed the silhouette of a female tennis player serving from the original logo, focusing on the three letters "WTA" throughout the design, with a new font and a green and white color scheme. The new font is thicker than before, with a certain ligature, and the design of the letter "A" has also undergone some subtle changes.
However, this new logo does not seem to have been widely recognized by the outside world, and fans at home and abroad have complained that its beauty is far less than before. Mladenovic and Tara Moore have publicly criticized the WTA for wasting money on the new logo, questioning the rationality of its resource allocation, especially when the organization is allegedly unable to meet some basic needs, while still investing in a brand refresh.
Mladenovic expressed her displeasure on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), writing: "I wonder how you guys came up with this design? Who approved it? Green and white? Don't have any tennis elements? What does this mean? The previous logo was much better. @WTA! ”
British professional tennis player Tara Moore also gave her opinion on this, commenting: "I heard that this 'rebranding' took six figures...... They say they don't have money, but they waste it on these inconsequential things. ”
The comments from both players reflect the disconnect between the WTA's strategic decisions and the actual needs of its athletes. Tara Moore directly blamed the WTA for wasting resources on things that were completely unnecessary, while at the same time, the organization complained about the lack of funding. It also highlights the challenges that professional sports organizations face between building their brands and meeting the real needs of their players. It will be interesting to see how the WTA will find a balance between different perspectives while launching its new image.
Earlier this month, nine-time Grand Slam doubles champion Mladenovic also expressed his displeasure over the US Open's decision to change the mixed doubles format and schedule.
The US Open organisers decided to schedule the mixed doubles match during the singles qualifying tournament and reduced the draw size from 32 to 16 pairs. Many have expressed concern that the move would significantly weaken the status of the mixed doubles event, making it more of an exhibition match than part of a Grand Slam event.
In response to this problem, Mladenovic wrote in a post on X: "Shocking news! They just did it to make more money in the first week of the tournament and turn the mixed doubles into an exhibition match that anyone could participate in! What about the singles qualifiers? Their doubles rankings would have allowed them to compete in mixed doubles, but what now? ”
She also stressed that those who qualify for singles will have to choose between the mixed doubles if they want to juggle the mixed doubles competition.
The 31-year-old has always been an outspoken critic of irrational decision-making in tennis. She recently reached the semi-finals of a doubles match with her partner Zhang Shuai at the Dubai Championship, but lost in straight sets to top seeds Townsend and Siniakova.(Source: Tennis Home Author: Spark)
