Grass surfaces are truly ideal for the game of the player holding the SEA Games 33 women's singles gold medal in Thailand late last year.
Philippine rising star - Alexandra Eala continued to create a memorable milestone in her career by impressively defeating world No. 2 Elena Rybakina on the evening of June 18 (Vietnam time) to reach the quarterfinals of the Berlin Open 2026.
In the round of 16 match at Steffi Graf Arena, Eala delivered a stunning performance to overcome the current top-ranked player in Asia with a score of 7-5, 6-4 after nearly two hours of play. This is regarded as one of the biggest wins of the 21-year-old's career.
At the start, Rybakina had the better start. The former Wimbledon champion broke early in the fourth game and quickly led 4-1 in the opening set. However, Eala remained calm. The Filipina capitalized on her opponent's errors, especially double faults, to get the break back and level at 4-4.
As the set became tightly contested near the end, Eala's composure proved decisive. She grabbed a crucial break in the 11th game and then held serve to wrap up the first set 7-5.
The reigning SEA Games champion kept up her momentum in the second set. After holding serve, she changed the match's course by breaking in the third game to go up 3-1. The Filipina maintained that narrow lead until the finish, thus sealing a convincing victory over one of the top title favorites.
This outstanding result marks Alex Eala's fifth win against a top-10 player, and also avenges her loss to Rybakina in the Rome Masters round of 32 last month.
In the Berlin Open 2026 quarterfinals on the evening of June 19 (Vietnam time), the top Southeast Asian player will take on Elina Svitolina (world No. 6).
