Tennis legend: Sinner is the top contender at Wimbledon, Zverev still unconvincing

The former world No.1, winner of seven Grand Slam singles titles, does not rate Zverev as a danger to Sinner at Wimbledon this year.

Ahead of Wimbledon 2026, tennis legend John McEnroe has shared notable insights on the men's singles title race. According to the ESPNexpert, Jannik Sinner is the strongest candidate for the trophy at the All England Club, while new Roland Garros champion Alexander Zverev has yet to earn his high regard on grass courts.

Carlos Alcaraz's forced withdrawal due to injury has significantly altered the landscape of this year's Wimbledon. In that context, Sinner has emerged as the most anticipated name. The Italian has just had an impressive season with a series of ATP Masters 1000 titles, despite disappointing fans by exiting early at Roland Garros after Juan Manuel Cerundolo's incredible comeback.

After his defeat in Paris, Sinner chose to rest rather than participate in grass-court warm-up events. However, this has not diminished the confidence the experts have in the world No.1.

"There is no doubt that Sinner is the leading candidate for the Wimbledon title this year." McEnroe stated. "He remains the most outstanding player in the title race."

Behind Sinner in McEnroe's assessment is Novak Djokovic. Although he was eliminated early at Roland Garros, the Serbian has shown many positive signs and is expected to continue being a formidable opponent on his favored grass surface.

Meanwhile, Alexander Zverev is not ranked among the top contenders, despite the fact that he just won his first Grand Slam title at Roland Garros. The German has also had a relatively good preparation, reaching the semifinals of the Halle Open before losing to Taylor Fritz.

According to McEnroe, Sascha's ability to adapt to grass remains a big question mark. He even believes Fritz and Ben Shelton have a better chance of winning than the world No.3.

"I don't see Zverev as a strong contender. Fritz just beat him in Halle and is in great form. Ben Shelton is also a more notable name on grass.", McEnroe shared.

Wimbledon 2026 will begin on June 29 with the main draw matches.
