Hardships on the Pro Tour: The 135th-ranked player is suffering from depression and suicidal thoughts

Argentine player Federico Agustín Gomez, currently ranked 135th in the world, has spoken openly about his depressive experiences and suicidal thoughts. He recounts the hardships of the professional circuit and how depression affects those who seem to be living happily ever after.

The 28-year-old has been playing professionally for more than 10 years, and his best results have come mainly in Challenger tournaments, where he has won three titles. He won his first ATP Challenger singles title in Milan, becoming the oldest debut winner of 2024. With this victory, he qualified for the main draw of the Chengdu Open and claimed his first ATP Tour victory in 2024.

In the qualifying rounds for the 2024 US Open and the 2025 Australian Open, Gomez failed to make it to the main draw. But despite this, his performance over the past 12 months has been the best of his career. Therefore, when he posted on social media about his psychological struggles, many people were surprised.

Gomez wrote: "The last six months have been one of the hardest moments of my life. I have repeatedly considered whether to give up tennis altogether, and even constantly questioned whether it was worth it, and even thought that I didn't want to live and wanted to leave this world. ”

Gomez didn't elaborate on the personal issues that got him into trouble, but expressed why he chose to be honest with him on social media — he wanted to unload the heavy burden. He stresses that he is not seeking sympathy, but simply understanding: "I am not writing this to gain attention, but to let people know that each of us has our own inner struggles, even if they do not manifest themselves in our daily lives. ”

In this post, Gomez also mentioned the progress he has made as a professional footballer. Despite being 28 years old and having been on the tour for 10 years, he admits he enjoys his time on the pitch now more than ever. This can also be seen in the three Challenger titles he won in 2024. Despite a rough start to 2025 and a number of consecutive defeats, he is still aware of his growth.

"It may come as a surprise to many, but 2024 is undoubtedly the best year of my tennis career, but it is also the worst year of my personal life."

Gomez's experience is an important reminder that depression can strike at any time, even at the peak of life or career. However, his post ended with a positive note: "I will try to regain the pure happiness that once belonged to me, and most importantly, to make myself feel comfortable again and understand that 'it's okay to be unhappy'." I'm still looking for the best version of myself, and I'm going to keep working hard to get back to my mental health. ”

Gomez seems to be actively seeking help to combat his inner struggle. If he can perform well in the upcoming "Sunshine Doubles" (Indian Wells and Miami Masters), it may also improve his mood.(Source: Tennis Home Author: Spark)
