Top 10 Indian Wells Masters to Watch

The 2025 ATP Masters 1000 season kicks off in Indian Wells and will see the top players on the ATP Tour compete in the tournament from 5 to 16 March. Alcaraz, Zverev and Novak Djokovic will all play.

Zverev and two-time defending champion Alcaraz lead the line-up, while Djokovic is chasing his sixth men's singles title to set a new record in this "tennis paradise".

Here's a breakdown of the 10 things to watch out for at the 2025 Indian Wells Masters.

1) Can Alcaraz achieve a Desert Treble?

Alcaraz is aiming to become only the third man after Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic to lift the trophy three years in a row. Alcaraz, who has an 11-2 record so far this season, won the title in Rotterdam and reached the quarter-finals in Doha in February. In California, he is chasing his sixth ATP1000 Masters title.

2) Djokovic chased a record sixth crown

If Djokovic wins, he will overtake Roger Federer to become the six-time tournament record holder. His last title was in 2016. After being forced to retire from the Australian Open semifinals due to injury in January, Djokovic made his comeback in Doha two weeks ago, losing to Berrettini in the first round. Now, he hopes to quickly regain his form in this event. His record in this tournament is 51-10.

3) Will top seed Zverev be able to bounce back from his lackluster performance in February?

Zverev competed in the California desert as the top seed. Zverev had a mediocre performance last month against Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro and Acapulco, with 4 wins and 3 losses. As a result, he also lost the opportunity to reach the top of the world during Sinner's suspension. Zverev has twice reached the quarterfinals of Indian Wells, including in 2024, when he lost to eventual champion Alcaraz in a memorable match disturbed by a swarm of bees.

4) Can Medvedev regain his heroic form?

Daniel Medvedev has played at his best in the last two Indian Wells Masters, reaching the final on both occasions and losing to Alcaraz in both cases. However, his current form is sluggish, and it is in suspense that he can do well again in California. Medvedev has an 8-5 record this year and was knocked out in the quarterfinals of the Race to Dubai last week.

The following juvenile photo does not seem to be much taller than Rublev at that time. Now Mr. Mei has long since faded away. Winning the US Open in 2021 and reaching world No. 1 in 2022, perhaps the highlight of his career?

5) Fritz leads the way with homegrown players

Taylor Fritz is the one who has experienced what it's like to win in Indian Wells. He defeated Rafael Nadal in 2022 to win the heaviest title of his career. This year, the 27-year-old Fritz will compete in his hometown tournament at the highest PIF ATP ranking of his career. However, it is reported that he has suffered abdominal injuries and it is unknown whether he has healed.

6) U.S. players assemble

In addition to Fritz, there are many other homegrown players to watch in the draw. The likes of Tommy Paul, Ben Shelton and Francis Tiafoe in the top 20 will be hoping to get a good result in Indian Wells with the support of their home fans. The same goes for Korda and Mickelson.

7) Competition from the top 10 in the world

After a successful trip to Dubai, Tsitsipas will arrive at Indian Wells with confidence. He lifted his first trophy in nearly 11 months on Saturday. Rublev, who is also in the top 10 in the world, also won the Middle East tournament, winning in Doha. Now, both Tsitsipas and Rublev will be aiming to win their first Masters 1000 title on hard courts.

8) Fonseca and Lernaqian lead the new generation of hope

The Indian Wells Masters offers several of the next generation of ATP stars the chance to earn more points on their way to the Jeddah Next Generation Finals. Joao Fonseca, the current leader in the live rankings, will make his debut as a wild card, less than three weeks after he lifted his first ATP Tour title in Buenos Aires. Homegrown darling Lerner Chin, who reached the fourth round of the Australian Open and has already beaten Medvedev and Zverev this season, will make his ATP main draw for the first time.

9) Arévalo/Pavic lead the doubles lineup

Marcelo Arévalo and Matt Pavic are the top seeds in the Indian Wells doubles draw as the Salvador-Croatian duo chase their first title of 2025. PIF ATP Live Tag Team No. 1 Harry Heliowala and Henry Patten are the No. 2 seeds, while Simeone Borelli and Andrea Vavasori are seeking their third ATP Tour title of the season.

10) Singles stars in two tournaments

Some of the top singles players have already confirmed that they will be stepping onto the doubles court in this "tennis paradise". Homegrown favourites Mickelson and Ben Shelton will be in the action, as will 2024 Madrid Open champions Korda/Thompson.

Two consecutive ATP1000 Masters in March. The North American Sunshine Double Game is a visual feast for fans.

The competition is about to start, and I am looking forward to it......
