Novak Djokovic seems to be a long way from a Grand Slam title for most of 2025, but there are still expectations that he will be able to find his peak form at the crucial moment and challenge for a 25th Grand Slam title.
Apart from a stellar performance in the semi-finals of the Australian Open, Carlos Alcaraz, and a stellar run to the final of the Miami Masters in March, Djokovic's form has been up and down this season, and it has been difficult to maintain his best. This is a continuation of his last year's trend of underwhelming form on the regular ATP Tour, but he was able to burst into force at major tournaments such as the Grand Slam and the Olympics, and even won gold at the Paris Olympics.
Despite his fluctuating form, Djokovic continued to make history and continue to challenge for a 25th Grand Slam title. Former doubles world No. 20 player Colin Fleming has confidence in him. Fleming believes that Djokovic has a strong desire and confidence for Grand Slam tournaments deep down, and despite his poor performances in Madrid, he still has the ability to quickly adjust his form in a major tournament such as the French Open. Novak Djokovic excelled at finding his rhythm over the course of two weeks, adapting to his opponents from the initial outfit and regaining his feel and form. Although the current situation is not ideal, Fleming is convinced that Djokovic still has a chance to win his 25th Grand Slam, after all, it will mean a lot to his career.
However, former British number one Annabelle Croft is pessimistic about Djokovic's prospects. Croft noted that as Djokovic is approaching the age of 38, age and physical condition are gradually becoming a burden for him. His body is no longer as comfortable as it used to be in high-intensity competitions, and injuries have increased. Today's opponents are no longer as fearful as they used to be when facing Djokovic, but feel that they have a chance to beat him, which undoubtedly adds to the difficulty of Djokovic's match.
Looking back at last year, Djokovic failed to win a single Grand Slam title and suffered a surprise loss to some lower-ranked players, which frustrated his confidence. Despite his classic victory at the Australian Open at the start of the year, Alcaraz has not been able to return to his best form since. Croft speculated that perhaps it was the interference of off-field factors, or the loss of self-confidence, that Djokovic's performance on the court was much worse than before. Even his withdrawal from his beloved Rome Masters reflects his poor form before the French Open.
Given Djokovic's current form, his withdrawal from the Rome Masters is not a surprise. However, the lack of enough clay practice ahead of the French Open undoubtedly makes his future at Roland Garros uncertain. Although Djokovic is aiming to make history and win his 25th Grand Slam title, it will be up to him to prove that he will be able to overcome the odds and reach the top of the Grand Slam podium again.
