Zverev: Determined in the ups and downs, he took the Rome Masters in stride
In the world of tennis, a player's season is often full of challenges and opportunities, and Alexander Zverev is no exception.
Zverev, the world No. 2 player and the reigning Italian BNL international tennis champion, has had a season with highs, lows and setbacks, but none of them have lost sight of his goal.
In 2025, Zverev had a chance to overtake Sinner in the rankings while Italy's Sinner was banned for a positive doping test, but his series of imbecible performances derailed his chances of becoming world number one. Zverev lost to Francisco Cerundolo in the fourth round of the Madrid Masters, and despite the somewhat stinging result, he remained positive. He said:
"To be honest, I didn't like the fight against him [Cerundolo]. I feel like outside of the top guys, like Giannick and Carlos, he's probably the toughest opponent for me. But overall, I feel like my level of tennis [in Madrid] is okay. I feel like I played three pretty good fights there. And I won the Munich race the week before...... I feel like I'm in great shape right now. ”
For the world No. 1 ranking, Zverev is hungry. He said:
"The ranking system doesn't lie, you score points when you win a game, and you get more points when you win a championship. I was able to come second because of my achievements. No. 1 in the world? That would be great, I haven't been to that location yet. I'm sure I can do it, so let's wait and see."
While his current results are not satisfactory to him, he is confident that the top players will come out on top at key moments in the big tournaments, and he still believes that he will find his form in the big tournaments.
Zverev will face Camilo Hugo Carabelli or qualifier in the first round of the tournament in Rome and could face Alcaraz in the semi-finals. He has a lot of faith in Roma and hopes to "play as well as last year and win a lot of games".
Zverev's first Masters title came in Rome. In 2017, he won the title by defeating Djokovic in the final.
Compared to 8 years ago, Zverev is also old. In this Madrid Masters, Zverev competed as the No. 2 seed. In the 4/4 of the draw, there are clay masters such as Musetti, Phils, and Tsitsipas. If they reach the semi-finals, they will face Alcaraz.
Zverev is on the road to tennis, and despite the ups and downs of the season, his desire for a title and his quest for victory have never changed, and he is expected to perform better in the following tournaments.
