With the French Open, one of the most high-profile tournaments in the tennis world just around the corner, there is a lot of talk about the prospects of the top players to win the title. Recently, Alexander Zverev expressed his opinion when asked whether Novak Djokovic could win the French Open, which attracted widespread attention.
Djokovic has accepted a wild card invitation to the ATP 250 event in Geneva, which will take place from May 18 to 24, before the French Open.
Apparently he continues to prepare for the French Open, although he has withdrawn from the tournament in Rome. He will be aiming to lift the French Open trophy for the fourth time and a record 25th Grand Slam title.
Djokovic has not had a good season on clay, with a 0-2 record, losing to Tabilo and Alnaldi in his opening matches in Monte Carlo and Madrid, respectively. He hasn't won a match since beating Dimitrov in the semifinals of the Miami Open in March.
Zverev, who is playing in Rome, was asked by reporters whether Djokovic, who recently missed the Rome Masters, "still has the strength to win the French Open". Zverev responded:
"He just dropped out of the race, didn't he? He has participated in all other events. Maybe his performance isn't up to his standards or expectations, but who can be at their best all the time? ”
"I still believe that once he gets back into form, he's still one of the most dangerous players in the world," he said. His abilities are beyond doubt. It's more a question of whether he still wants to do it and whether he's willing to put in the effort. It's a question to ask him, I can't answer, but he's better at tennis than everyone else. ”
Zverev and Djokovic have a 5-8 record in previous meetings. Zverev won the most recent meeting in the semi-finals of the 2025 Australian Open, when Djokovic retired due to injury. But it is clear that Zverev has always had a lot of respect for Djokovic.
In addition, Zverev said: "Roland Garros is definitely my main goal, I said that last year, Grand Slam tournaments are my main goal. I reached the final at the Australian Open and it was very painful for me to lose in that way, but luckily I got four chances a year. For me, the French Open has always been one of the tournaments I'm looking forward to the most and I hope to play well there and show what I'm capable of. ”
As the reigning champion of the Rome event, Zverev will face world No. 14 Arthur Fils in the fourth round.
