On May 15, 2025, on the court of the Italian Open, a high-profile tennis duel came to an end. Sixth seed Ruud faced world No. 1 Sinner in Rome's semi-finals and lost 0-6, 1-6 to win just one game. After the game, Ruud gave Sinner a very high rating, calling it a "supergod-level operation".
In the game, Sinner was on fire from the first point and showed excellent competitive form. Ruud saved two break points at the start of the second set to win the only game of the match, but he was a little powerless in the face of Sinner's continued burst of strength. It is worth mentioning that Ruud won his first ATP Masters title in Madrid 11 days ago, but in this match in Rome, he was broken by Sinner six times on serve, and the whole match lasted only 64 minutes.
After the game, Ruud behaved very open-mindedly, he confessed:
"To be honest it doesn't feel that bad, even though it was lost (0 - 6, 1 - 6) but it was more fun than anything else. You look at your opponent and can only say, 'This is a super-god-level operation,' forgive me for the wording, but I don't know what else to say. It's almost a pleasure to witness this at the same time. ”
Ruud also expressed his expectations for the match, hoping to give the crowd a longer and closer matchup:
'I think I'm ready, but he's obviously more prepared. Every time I hit a good shot, he was able to press back better, and I couldn't respond with a better shot. That's what the game is all about. ”
Ruud was not shy about Sinner's performance:
It's the closest I've ever seen (at least as a fighter) to perfection, and I can only salute him. In the first four games, I may have made a few mistakes on my forehand, but other times, he hit the ball like a cannonball traveling at over 100 kilometers per hour. This is true for every forehand and backhand. Even if I think I have a bit of power, he's quick to hit back. It's amazing.
After a strong end to a nine-game winning streak, Ruud will quickly adjust his form and defend his title at the Geneva Open next week. The 13-time ATP champion also reflected on his performance, saying:
The most disappointing thing for me today was the serve, if the serve was better, of course I could have scored more free points. Bottom line, I've probably won one or two long multi-shot rounds, and when you think about it, I'm not even sure if there were. There should be one or two. He dominated most of the baseline against him, although I tried to organize the attack at my own pace. He's everywhere. It's like saying that when somebody plays so well, you feel like they have two forehands – a true forehand on one side and a backhand on the other. And his backhand is just as good, it's like having two forehands, it's like playing against a wall that keeps firing balls at you at 100 kilometers per hour.
This match undoubtedly showed Sinner's super strength, and he will be invincible in the ATP?
