Not long ago, Federer and his wife Mirka unexpectedly visited the Nadal Tennis Academy, where the two icons shared laughs and updated their social media accounts together, sparking media interest.
As for the purpose of Federer and his wife's visit, the internet is abuzz with speculation, and three main scenarios can be summarized from various rumors: first, Federer and Mirka are checking out the Nadal Academy to enroll their children in tennis classes, which would be a positive development; second, Federer is visiting the academy to assess the environment, possibly considering investing and partnering with former colleagues to expand their business; third, they might be preparing to coach Zverev alongside Nadal.
As the situation unfolds, the videos circulating on social media have gained traction, revealing more insights. According to Spanish media reports, while the exact purpose of their visit has not been officially disclosed, various signs suggest that the Federers' trip may be related to their children's educational plans.
As the greatest rivals in tennis history, the friendship between Federer and Nadal has long surpassed mere competition. Over their more than twenty-year careers, they faced each other 40 times, with Nadal leading 24 wins to 16 losses, including the 2008 Wimbledon final, which is regarded as one of the greatest matches in tennis history.
With the end of their professional careers, the intense rivalry on the court has transformed into a deep friendship, and Federer and Nadal, once fierce competitors, have become close friends. Their last joint appearance was on the opening day of the 2025 French Open, where Federer, Djokovic, and Murray gathered to pay tribute to Nadal, a 14-time champion at Roland Garros.
Federer once emotionally stated, "Having the closest players by your side during retirement is incredibly meaningful. I believe this sense of closure is also very important for Nadal."
Regarding the purpose of Federer's visit, there have been hints for some time. Back in October 2016, when the academy opened, Federer attended as a guest of honor and stated, "If my kids want to play tennis, I will definitely send them here."
Now, nine years later, this promise seems to be coming to fruition. Federer casually mentioned in an interview, "All four kids love tennis. The boys spent a few days at Nadal's training camp in Mallorca."
As for the public's curiosity about why Federer isn't personally coaching his children in tennis, he has already addressed this: "Since announcing my retirement, I haven't played much tennis aside from with my kids. I only play with friends during holidays." This explains why Federer chose to send his kids to Nadal's academy.
Additionally, during the retirement ceremony at the 2022 Laver Cup, when asked about plans to vacation in Nadal's hometown of Mallorca, Federer provided some "hard evidence." At that time, he revealed, "I plan to send the kids to the tennis academy; I've already discussed it with Mirka."
Of course, Federer's choice of Nadal's academy stems partly from their past rivalry, but also because he recognizes the academy's heritage and strength.
Since its establishment in 2016, the Nadal Academy has become a world-class tennis education center. The academy boasts 23 hard courts, 20 clay courts, 12 padel courts, 2 squash courts, 1 football field, and 2 competition-level swimming pools, offering a robust infrastructure to provide children with a comprehensive and well-rounded sports education environment.
Notably, the academy emphasizes not only sports training but also has dedicated teachers responsible for the cultural education of youths aged 10 to 18. This integration of sports and education attracts young talents from around the globe, having produced renowned players like Ruud and Munar.
Federer's recognition of the academy has a long history. On the first anniversary of the Nadal Academy in 2017, Federer recorded a special video stating, "I hope to receive another invitation from the academy to go there and play with the young players."
Nadal humorously responded, "There's only one situation where you won't receive an invitation: if you keep playing this well, I won't invite you. Just kidding, the academy's doors are always open for you."
Furthermore, Swiss media speculate that the potential collaboration between the two legends may extend beyond just children's education. This is because Federer has expressed interest in collaborating with the Nadal Academy in interviews after his retirement. At that time, the academy's official Twitter account humorously responded, asking Federer to "submit a resume."
Although this was just a joke, there remains a possibility for collaboration between the two legends. It is reported that just days before Federer's visit, Nadal had already planned to establish another tennis academy in Riyadh. Nadal stated, "I continue to play tennis because I love the sport. But besides playing, I also want to help the sport develop broadly in various areas."
Thus, the potential collaboration between the two could be diverse, and we can look forward to more exciting developments in their future partnership.(Source: Tennis Home, Author: Lu Xiaotian)
