Next week (July 21-27) ATP event overview

The 2025 ATP Tour continues. Three events will take place across two continents next week. Fritz and Musetti are the top two seeds at the ATP 500 Washington Open on hard courts, while two ATP 250 events on clay will also kick off in Europe.

Bublik is the top seed at the Generali Open in Kitzbühel, while F. Cerundolo is the top seed and defending champion at the Croatia Umag Open.

Five highlights of the Washington Open

1. Fritz poised for success: After an outstanding grass season where he won titles in Stuttgart and Eastbourne and reached the Wimbledon semifinals, Fritz is currently ranked fourth in the ATP standings. His last appearance at the Washington Open was in 2023, where he made it to the semifinals, and he will compete this year as the top seed.

2. Can Musetti/Rune bounce back?: Both Musetti and Rune exited in the first round at Wimbledon, and they hope to quickly regain their form in Washington, entering as the second and third seeds respectively. This is Musetti's first participation in the event, while Rune has only appeared once in 2022.

3. American players in action: American players such as Ben Shelton, Tiafoe, and Michelson will be aiming for victory on home soil. Brandon Nakashima, Giron, and the rising star Lehecka will also compete.

4. Rublev, De Minaur, and Medvedev will all participate in this event.

5. Former champion Evans returns to Washington: British player Evans enters with a wild card, having won his second ATP Tour title here in 2023. His record in tour-level events this year stands at 5 wins and 5 losses.

6. Kyrgios/Monfils debut in doubles: Former singles champions at the Washington Open, Nick Kyrgios and Gael Monfils, will team up for the first time in a star-studded doubles partnership. Kyrgios had a standout moment here in 2022, winning both singles and doubles titles. Top seeds Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori are also aiming for their fourth title of the season.

Five highlights of the Kitzbühel Open

1. Bublik continues strong summer season in Europe: After reaching his first clay tour final in Gstaad, Bublik will lead the field in Kitzbühel. The 28-year-old aims to maintain his excellent form from the past two months, having reached the quarterfinals at the French Open and defeated Jannik Sinner to win his second title in Halle.

2. Can former champion Baeza end his slump?: Since reaching the Bucharest final in April, Baeza has only won two out of nine matches on the clay tour. The Argentine clay specialist won his third ATP Tour title here in 2023. He will compete next week as the second seed, looking to turn his fortunes around.

3. Local hopes: Austrian players Philipp Misolic, Sebastian Ofner, Lukas Neumayer, and 19-year-old Joel Schwatzler are all looking to shine on home soil. Misolic reached his first ATP Tour final in Kitzbühel in 2022 and recently made it to the quarterfinals in Bastad, showing great form, and he broke into the top 100 for the first time on Monday.

4. Rising star Engel: Seventeen-year-old Justin Engel qualified through the "Next Gen Accelerator Program," which provides more tour opportunities for players aged 20 and under. Engel became the first player born in 2007 or later to win a main draw match on the ATP Tour and is currently ranked 12th in the live ATP Gijon Finals standings.

5. Klaasen/Puetz lead in doubles: Current Nitto ATP Finals champions Kevin Krawietz and Tim Pütz are the top seeds in doubles, aiming for their second title of the season, but they will face challenges from Austrian players Lucas Miedler (a two-time champion in Kitzbühel) and his partner Francisco Cabral.

Five highlights of the Umag Open

1. Cerundolo's title defense: After reaching the semifinals in Bastad, Cerundolo returns to Umag, aiming to defend his title—his most recent tour victory. His clay record for 2025 stands at 21 wins and 10 losses, second only to Alcaraz (22 wins) in clay match victories.

2. In-form seeded players pose a threat: Darderi and Carballes Baena are coming to Umag with high spirits from Bastad. Darderi reached the final after defeating top seed Cerundolo, while Carballes Baena fell in the semifinals.

3. Former champion Wawrinka: Stan Wawrinka has only one win and ten losses in tour-level events this year, but the 40-year-old can draw motivation from his past experiences in Umag—he won the title here in 2006 and reached the final in 2023 (his most recent appearance).

4. Prizmic aims for Gijon qualification: A major focus at Umag is 19-year-old local hope Dino Prizmic, who enters with a wild card. The Croatian player will face Elmar Moeller in the first round and is currently ranked fourth in the live ATP Gijon Finals standings.

5. Defending doubles champion Andreozzi partners with Arentz: Guido Andreozzi and Sandro Arentz reached the Bastad final on Sunday and are the top seeds in Umag doubles. Andreozzi won his first ATP Tour title in Umag last year alongside Miguel Reyes-Varela.

For professional players, matches are work; for fans, watching matches is entertainment... each fulfilling their role.
