Rune or collaborating with the legendary Agassi?

Recently, Danish tennis player Rune was seen training with Andre Agassi in Washington. With Agassi observing, this scene rapidly generated buzz, leading to speculation that the two may be trying to form a player-coach partnership.

If Agassi truly becomes part of Rune's team, he won't be the first former Grand Slam champion to work with Rune. Previously, Boris Becker served as Rune's head coach from October 2023 to February 2024.

Rune's coaching team has seen frequent changes, currently led by Kenneth Carlsen and Lars Christensen. Notably, renowned coach Mouratoglou ended his collaboration with Rune in July 2024.

Rune has his own criteria for selecting coaches. After parting ways with Becker in 2024, he candidly stated, “I worked with the same coach for 15 years throughout my tennis career, so finding the perfect partner on the first try isn’t easy.” He emphasized the need for those around him to share a grand vision, be trustworthy, and understand him well enough to provide consistent support—this helps him gain a sense of security and motivation in an ever-changing environment.

It’s worth mentioning that Agassi, as a former world number one, has extensive coaching experience, having collaborated with Novak Djokovic from 2017 to 2018 and later joining Grigor Dimitrov's team from 2018 to 2020.

From a competitive standpoint, Rune's 2025 season has been a mix of highs and lows. He reached the fourth round at both the Australian Open and the French Open but withdrew from the Rotterdam event due to illness and pulled out of the Acapulco tournament because of food poisoning. After withdrawing from the Mexican event, he took a three-week break and subsequently reached his first final in 15 months at Indian Wells (ultimately losing to Jack Draper), but then exited in the first round of the Miami Masters. During the clay season, his performance remained inconsistent: he retired while trailing 2-6, 0-3 against Pedro Martinez in Monte Carlo; however, he delivered one of his best clay performances in Barcelona, defeating defending champion Alcaraz.

In the recent Wimbledon, Rune's performance was again hampered by injury. He lost in the first round with scores of 4-6, 4-6, 7-5, 3-6, 4-6 to Jarry.

After the match, he attributed his defeat to knee pain, stating, “If I played normally, I would win nine out of ten times against him.”

After experiencing discomfort in his knee at the start of the fourth set and receiving treatment, both his serve and backhand could not return to the level of the first two sets. In fact, the knee issue is an old injury; earlier this season at the Madrid Masters, he had to retire due to injury while facing Italian player Cobolli.

Injuries are part of the game. A professional player’s care for their body is a crucial aspect of their career. So, I can only blame myself.

Currently, regardless of whether Agassi will officially join the team, it is highly likely that Rune will receive guidance from the legendary figure during the Washington ATP 500 event from July 21 to 27. Whether this "joint training" can evolve into a long-term partnership may soon be revealed.
