On July 19, 2025, in the ATP 250 Los Cabos Open final, third seed Shapovalov defeated seventh seed Kovacevic with a score of 6-4, 6-2, achieving his second title of the season and the fourth of his career without dropping a set.
“We have been working hard for several years, and recovering from injuries has not been easy. But everything we have done has paid off.” With this victory, Shapovalov's world ranking rises to No. 28. Last year, he fell to No. 140, but over the past ten months, he has been diligently working on his comeback.
Shapovalov also praised his opponent: “I want to congratulate Alexander (Kovacevic) for having an amazing week. He defeated some great players. To be honest, I didn’t watch the match yesterday (against Rublev), but my coach told me you played incredibly, so congratulations on an amazing week. I think you are a fantastic player. I love your game. Clearly, we (one-handed backhand players) need to stick together. I absolutely love watching you play.”
