Even though she hasn't competed in professional tours for quite a while, Zheng Qinwen is still a significant figure in Chinese tennis, with her injury concerns drawing attention once more.
It is reported that the Chinese tennis star underwent minimally invasive surgery on her right elbow on July 18 (Friday, Beijing time), aimed at completely resolving the long-standing elbow pain.
The injury in that area actually began during last winter's training, when Zheng often experienced discomfort in her right elbow, a similar issue that forced her to withdraw from several competitions and affected her performance in matches.
After conservative treatment yielded little success, Zheng decided to undergo the surgery based on professional advice. The operation was very successful, and notable figures like Billie Jean King and Novak Djokovic expressed their concern and well-wishes shortly after on related posts.
Following the surgery, the rehabilitation process began. According to reports from CCTV News, if all goes well, Zheng's recovery period is about 3-4 weeks, which means she still has a chance to participate in the US Open at the end of August.
Of course, prior tournaments such as the Montreal Open and Cincinnati Open will be completely out of reach for her. For Zheng Qinwen at this moment, the top priority is to recover quickly, as she is still young and has a long professional career ahead of her.
Looking back at Zheng Qinwen's performance this season, she has had ups and downs in the first three Grand Slam events, defeating Romanian player Todoni in the first round of the Australian Open but losing to Siegmund in the second round.
Fortunately, after moving to Roland Garros, she adjusted her form in time, eliminating Pavlyuchenkova, Arango, Mboko, and Samsonova, becoming the second Chinese player to reach the women's singles quarterfinals at the French Open after Li Na.
In the subsequent quarterfinals, Zheng ultimately lost to top seed Sabalenka, missing out on the semifinals, while Sabalenka advanced to the final and lost to Gauff.
At Wimbledon, Zheng drew Siniakova, who had defeated her multiple times before, and once again lost to her on the grass courts, exiting in the first round of Wimbledon.
Since then, Zheng has been sidelined, but her performance this season has still been commendable; she has earned approximately $1.43 million in prize money, ranking tenth in the seasonal earnings list, and first among all Chinese players, with Wang Xinyu trailing behind at around $590,000.
We look forward to Zheng Qinwen's full return and hope she can once again showcase the beautiful Chinese red on the tour!(Source: Tennis Home, Author: Barbie)
