Is Serena really coming back? Surprisingly, Venus didn't deny it when asked: she will let everyone know when she's ready.

The chances of Serena Williams making a comeback are very low, but not completely out of the question—at least that's the belief among online fans. The reality is that even her sister Venus Williams can't definitively confirm whether this American icon has really retired for good.

This 23-time Grand Slam champion retired in 2022, with her final match at the US Open. Since then, she has also been officially listed as a retired player by the International Tennis Federation. However, Serena's influence and legendary status are so powerful that whenever she posts a video of her returning to the court, fans' hopes are reignited.

Last week, this scene played out again. Serena shared a video on social media of her training on the court with her sister Venus, which immediately sparked discussions online. Considering Venus is set to compete in this week's Washington Open, it makes more sense for her to be training again, as she will face fellow American Stearns in the first round.

At the Washington press conference, Venus was naturally asked about her sister's plans, but she couldn't provide a clear answer. Instead of speculating about the future, this seven-time Grand Slam champion chose to praise her sister, marveling at how, even after years away from competition, her strokes remain so pure and powerful.

“She could take six months off and still hit the ball cleanly; that kind of talent can't be taught, she’s just that good. I don't know what she wants to do, and I won't ask those questions. I think we’ve always played because that’s who we are; we’ve always been hitting the ball,” Venus said.

Venus also jokingly remarked that perhaps her sister just sees tennis as a form of cardio to stay fit. At the same time, she admitted that she misses Serena's company a lot:

“Honestly, playing tennis is really great cardio. It keeps your legs and arms in great shape, which people might not realize, so staying fit is clearly one of her goals. I always tell my team, ‘The only thing that could make this better is if she were here too.’ We’ve always done everything together, so of course I miss her. But if she really comes back, I believe she will let everyone know herself.”

The last time Venus participated in a singles match dates back to 2024, where she exited in the first round at both Indian Wells and the Miami Open. This time, she is returning to the Citi DC Open in Washington thanks to a wildcard.

Before the tournament starts, this American veteran delivered a heartfelt message to her team, family, and friends, stating that it is their love that has helped her persevere through the ups and downs of her career.

“You know, I believe in love, in the people around me—my family and my friends. They keep me going and grounded. They were with me during my toughest times. They also supported me when I was at my best, because actually being at the top is not easy—you need to maintain a high level and handle everything in the moment. So, it’s love that has carried me through.”

Additionally, Venus will team up with Barty to compete in the women's doubles this week.(Source: Tennis Home, Author: Spark)
