Wu Yibing secures a spot in the US Open qualifiers, and the 45-year-old Venus Williams shows she’s still got it!

In the early hours of Beijing time, the 2025 ATP/WTA 500 Washington and WTA 250 Prague tournaments kicked off on hard courts. This week, three Chinese players, Wang Xinyu, Bu Yunchaokete, and Wu Yibing, successfully advanced past the first round of the singles main draw.

Wang Xinyu, as the fourth seed, faced British player Dart in the first round of the WTA Prague women's singles. The two players have met twice before, with the most recent match at last year's Wimbledon, where Wang Xinyu won in three sets. In this match, although Wang Xinyu had some ups and downs, she maintained control of the game and ultimately won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3. Tonight at 8:00 PM Beijing time, Wang Xinyu will continue her campaign on Court 1, facing local wildcard player Havlíčková for a spot in the quarterfinals.

After advancing through the qualifiers, Wu Yibing faced French veteran Monfils in the first round of the ATP Washington tournament. In this match, Wu Yibing showcased his speed advantage at the baseline, effectively controlling the rhythm of the game. Ultimately, he achieved two breaks in each set, winning decisively in just 78 minutes with a score of 6-3, 6-1.

This marks Wu Yibing's first victory in a tour-level main draw since last year's Shanghai Rolex Masters. After earning 41 ranking points from this event, his live ranking has risen to No. 203, securing his place in the US Open qualifiers. In the second round, he will face Australian player Poprin, with the match set to begin at 11:00 PM Beijing time at John Harris Court.

Bu Yunchaokete

Bu Yunchaokete qualified directly for the ATP Washington men's singles main draw based on his ranking, and he drew Belgian veteran Goffin, currently ranked No. 60 in the world, in the first round. In this match, Bu Yunchaokete matched Goffin's baseline exchanges, breaking serve in the third game of the first set and taking it 6-3. The second set was a tug-of-war, but Bu Yunchaokete saved break points at crucial moments and managed to break and hold serve, ultimately winning in straight sets, 6-3, 7-5.

This victory marks Bu Yunchaokete's first at the ATP 500 level since last year's China Open, and his next opponent will be the seventh seed De Minaur, with this match scheduled to follow Wu Yibing's match.

Venus Williams

In the women's singles event at the WTA 500 Washington tournament, local legend Venus Williams, competing with a wildcard, defeated Stearns 6-3, 6-4. At 45 years old, she becomes the oldest player to win a match at the WTA tour level since Martina Navratilova (47 years old) at Wimbledon in 2004. After advancing to the second round, Venus Williams will face the fifth seed, Frech.

In other matches, Raducanu overcame seventh seed Kostyuk 7-6(4), 6-4, while Osaka eliminated Putintseva 6-2, 7-5. Both former US Open women's singles champions enjoyed successful starts to the North American season and will meet in a highly anticipated second-round clash.

In the women's doubles event, second seeds Zhang Shuai/Townsend defeated Bouchard/Merichal 6-3, 6-1 and will face Venus Williams/Baptiste in the second round. Third seeds Jiang Xinyu/Zhan Haoqing showcased their skills against Pieterse/Santamaria, winning 6-1, 7-6(4), and will compete against the local duo Dolehide/Kenin.
