The dual coaching team has successfully developed the world's number one, Jannik Sinner.

In July 2025, Italian tennis player Jannik Sinner's coach, Simone Vagnozzi, became a focal point in ATP coaching. Since February 2022, Vagnozzi has been collaborating with Sinner, and together with another coach, Darren Cahill, they form a dual coaching team that, through patience, precision, and relentless preparation, has propelled the 23-year-old Sinner to the top of the ATP rankings, creating a legendary journey from a promising star to world number one.

“Becoming world number one means approaching every tournament with the goal of winning,” Vagnozzi stated in an interview. The team firmly believes that thorough preparation and full commitment are essential to seize opportunities for competition and victory, and their core principle is to “do our best with a clear conscience.” This philosophy is also reflected in the collaboration of the dual coaching team.

The collaboration between Vagnozzi and Cahill exemplifies the principle of “1+1>2.” From the beginning, they quickly established a rapport and consistently prioritized Sinner's interests. In terms of division of labor, Vagnozzi leads technical and tactical planning, while Cahill focuses on psychological and emotional guidance; in their collaboration, they share all information to ensure that what reaches Sinner is always a “unified voice.” Cahill's extensive experience complements Vagnozzi's stable output, maintaining strict training requirements while building trust in a personable manner, and this balance is key to the team's success.

It is noteworthy that Cahill, who originally planned to end his coaching tenure by the end of the year, now faces uncertainties due to a “championship agreement” with Sinner before the Wimbledon final (if Sinner wins, he can decide whether to stay on). “If Darren can stay, we would all be very happy,” Vagnozzi's expectations reflect the mutual recognition within this dual coaching team.

In Vagnozzi's view, once a player reaches world number one, the coach's role does not diminish; rather, it becomes more significant due to the player's high self-expectations—they need to become “guides” who help the player unlock their maximum potential and even be bold enough to tell the player the “unpleasant truths.” The process of accompanying the player in their pursuit of the pinnacle is also a journey of growth for the coach. As he said, “An excellent coach should be like a chameleon, adjusting methods based on different players to create unique value for them.”

Of course, Sinner's own qualities form the foundation of his success. This player, who holds four Grand Slam titles and has been ranked world number one for 59 consecutive weeks, possesses a maturity and sense of purpose beyond his years, while also retaining the vitality of a 23-year-old. His attitude of “continuous improvement and never being satisfied” keeps him motivated in training. Vagnozzi also emphasizes that this attitude needs to be cultivated both internally and externally—the player must not only train on the court but also actively learn and anticipate matches to truly build competitive strength.

Today, Sinner continues to write the highlights of his professional career, while the dual coaching team of Vagnozzi and Cahill, driven by the belief of “steadily moving towards our goals,” continues to accompany him on his journey. They demonstrate through collaboration that when specialized division of labor, unified philosophy, and player talent intersect, it can spark the powerful energy needed to create a “world number one.”

It is worth noting that whether Sinner was embroiled in the controversy of “two positive drug tests” or ultimately accepted a three-month suspension, as well as the recent return of one of the “culprits,” fitness trainer Ferrara, to the team, Vagnozzi and Cahill have rarely spoken publicly. Perhaps this is the attitude Sinner needs.
