A review of the champions of the Toronto Masters over the past decade: De Minaur on top, and the "King" shines!

The Toronto Masters has officially begun. Although the absence of many top players seems to diminish the event's allure, a Masters is still a Masters and certainly merits attention. Before the competition reaches its climax, let's reflect on the champions from the last decade.

2024 Poprin

The Australian who claimed victory last year indeed pulled off a stunning upset. After all, the formidable De Minaur, despite having won three 500-level titles in his career and reaching the quarterfinals of all Grand Slams, still has to look up to Poprin in terms of Masters achievements. Last year, he defeated Rublev in the final, leaving the latter's quest for his first hard-court Masters title still unfulfilled.

2023 Sinner

This marks the world number one's first Masters title, as well as his first major title. Sinner had reached the finals of the Miami Masters twice before but lost to Hurkacz and Medvedev; this time, facing the servant De Minaur, the Italian successfully seized the opportunity, marking the beginning of his journey toward becoming a tennis king.

2022 Carreno Busta

In recent years, the Toronto Masters has been known for producing new champions. In 2022, Busta, who had previously reached the US Open semifinals twice, once again delivered an impressive performance in the North American fall events and ultimately triumphed over two-time Masters champion Hurkacz. This victory was hard-earned, especially considering the Polish player's high win rate in finals.

2021 Medvedev

In this edition of the tournament, Medvedev faced challenges from several American powerhouses but managed to navigate through them successfully, ultimately achieving a remarkable North American triple crown.

2019 Nadal

2018 Nadal

In the two years when the tournament was canceled due to the pandemic, Nadal emerged as the ultimate winner, defeating his long-time rival in back-to-back years. Notably, in 2019, he narrowly triumphed over Medvedev in a five-set battle in the US Open final, becoming the biggest winner of that North American hard-court season.

2017 Zverev

This was Zverev's first hard-court major title. After defeating Djokovic in Rome that year, the German also overcame another giant, Federer, at the Toronto Masters, showcasing an impressive debut performance!

2016 Djokovic

2015 Murray

These two years were expected to be peak years for Djokovic and Murray, but they turned out to be quite the opposite. In 2015, while Djokovic was racking up major titles, it was Murray who thwarted him in the Toronto Masters final, one of the few major titles Djokovic lost. In 2016, after achieving a Grand Slam at the French Open, Djokovic faltered at Wimbledon, and although he managed to bounce back against Nishikori at the Masters, he was again defeated by Wawrinka in the subsequent US Open final.

Among the top-ranked players participating this year, Shelton, Musetti, and De Minaur have yet to taste the sweetness of a Masters title. Will the champion be one of them?(Source: Tennis Home, Author: Luo Cheng Qiye)
