New Danish sweetheart? Torsen advances strongly to the semifinals, marking her best season yet.

The 2025 WTA 1000 Montreal tournament has concluded all quarterfinal matches. In the final list of qualifiers, we were pleasantly surprised to see high-ranked seed players like Rybakina, as well as returning veterans like Naomi Osaka. The local wildcard player Mboko's consecutive victories have also excited the home fans. Of course, among the finalists, the most noteworthy victory belongs to the Danish player Torsen.

As the 16th seed in this tournament, Torsen enjoyed a bye in the first round. After defeating Blonzetti and Starodubtseva in the second and third rounds, Torsen faced the tournament's second seed Swiatek in the round of 16. Ultimately, she continued her hot streak in this event, eliminating her opponent with a score of 7-6, 6-3, achieving sweet revenge after losing to Swiatek in the fourth round at Wimbledon, marking her second time reaching the quarterfinals of this level tournament in her career.

“A few weeks ago, I lost to her at Wimbledon, so it’s obviously great to beat her here today because I wasn’t at my best in that match. I felt I played well overall at Wimbledon. So if I can maintain that form, I have a chance.”

After defeating Swiatek, Torsen then triumphed over the tournament's sixth seed Keys in the subsequent quarterfinal, reaching the women's singles semifinals. So far this season, the Danish girl has defeated world number one Sabalenka, the new Australian Open champion Keys, the new Wimbledon champion Swiatek, former Wimbledon champion Rybakina, and former Australian Open champion Kenin, showcasing her impressive form.

In fact, after winning against Keys, Torsen's WTA main draw victory count this season has reached 32, a number that even surpasses her total from 2022 to 2024. This year, she has reached the WTA women's singles semifinals four times and has defeated players ranked in the world's top ten on four occasions.

According to the draw, her opponent in the semifinals will be Japan's star player Naomi Osaka, who just swept the tournament's tenth seed Svitolina, advancing to the semifinals of a 1000-level event for the sixth time in her career, following her appearance in the 2022 Miami tournament. The two faced each other in the finals of this year's Auckland event, where Osaka lost.

In women's doubles, Zhang Shuai teamed up with American player Townsend to reach the final. This marks Zhang's fifth women's doubles final of the season: she was runner-up at WTA 500 Abu Dhabi with partner Mela, runner-up at WTA 250 Austin with Kessler, runner-up at WTA 500 Stuttgart with Alexandrov, and champion at WTA 500 Washington with Townsend.

Although she has more runner-up finishes, veteran Zhang Shuai's performance has been quite impressive. This is also her third time reaching the WTA 1000 women's doubles final in her career, having previously reached the finals in Miami in 2019 and Cincinnati in 2021, winning the latter with partner Stosur.
