The 2025 Montreal 1000 tournament has just concluded, and the newly upgraded Cincinnati event has kicked off its singles main draw first round. Although Zheng Qinwen was unable to compete this year due to recovery issues after surgery, we are pleased to see five players from mainland China making their appearances in the main event. Let's take a look at their results.
Buyun Zhao Kete 6-4 2-6 5-7 Fonseca
Last week, Buyun Zhao Kete achieved victory at the Masters in Montreal but was unable to maintain his good form in Cincinnati. Facing the Brazilian young player Fonseca, born in 2006, he lost after winning the first set. It was particularly unfortunate that he could not secure the win despite leading 5-5 and 40-15 in the deciding set.
Shang Jun Cheng 7-6 6-7 4-6 Echeverry
Returning from injury, Shang Jun Cheng faced his second tournament in Cincinnati. His match against Echeverry was quite dramatic. The young Chinese player was down 0-4 in the first set tiebreak but managed to turn it around and win the first set. In the second set, despite leading 5-2, he was reversed by his opponent, and the match was paused due to rain at one point.
Wang Yafan 4-6 3-6 Stearns
Last week in Montreal, Wang Yafan had a grueling 196-minute match against her first-round opponent Starobatseva, losing with a score of 7-6(6) 4-6 4-6. In Cincinnati, Wang Yafan faced Stearns and suffered a more straightforward defeat, being eliminated in straight sets.
Zhu Lin 7-6 2-6 6-7 Bronzetti
Veteran Zhu Lin continued to showcase her "screenwriter" nature in Cincinnati, with her match against Bronzetti lasting a total of 3 hours and 27 minutes. In the third set tiebreak, she lost the match after wasting a match point, leaving fans feeling disappointed.
Yuan Yue 6-2 6-2 Buksha
Despite losing in the final round of the women's singles qualifiers, Yuan Yue benefited from a withdrawal and entered the main draw as a lucky loser. In the first round, she faced fellow lucky loser Buksha. Ultimately, the Chinese player won in straight sets and will meet the 14th seed Schneider in the next round (the two have faced each other three times before, with Yuan Yue winning all three).
Wang Xinyu 7-6 6-3 Arango
Wang Xinyu's victory was also relatively easy, defeating Arango with a 2-0 score. This win marked her first victory in the tournament in Cincinnati. However, the unlucky draw means she will soon face world No. 2 Gauff in the second round. The two have met twice before, with a record of 1 win and 1 loss (the most recent encounter was in Berlin, where Wang Xinyu emerged victorious).
In addition to the two remaining singles players, this year's Cincinnati women's doubles event features several Chinese players. Xu Yifan/Yang Zhaoxuan faced the team of [7] Babos/Stefanie in the first round; Guo Hanyu continued to partner with Panova against Kato Miwa/Voskoboeva; Zhang Shuai and Townsend, as the tournament's 3rd seeds, will challenge Melichar/Samsonova in the first round; Jiang Xinyu teamed up with Zhan Haoqing as the tournament's 8th seeds, facing Aoyama Shuko/Buksha in the first round.(Source: Tennis Home, Author: Barbie)
