The round of 16 match at the 2025 Men's Volleyball World Championship in Pasay City (Philippines) saw Belgium claim a commanding 3-0 win over Finland, with set scores of 25-21, 25-17, and 25-21.
Belgium's superiority was due to efficient tactics, steady scoring ability, and strong blocking, while Finland only managed brief periods of catching up.
Right from the first set, opposite hitter Reggers became the main attacking threat with powerful spikes from the right side, scoring consecutive points that helped Belgium quickly build a lead. Captain and outside hitter Sam Deroo was outstanding not only in attack but also contributed 4 successful blocks, helping to shut down Jokela’s attacks from Finland.
Belgium convincingly defeated Finland to advance to the quarterfinals of the 2025 Men's Volleyball World Championship.
Although opposite hitter Jokela played hard, scoring 13 attack points and an additional ace, the lack of variety in setter Tervaportti’s playmaking made Finland’s offense predictable. Belgium won the first set 25-21.
In the second set, Belgium showed even greater dominance. Reggers continued his strong form, accumulating 18 attack points and 2 blocks throughout the match, confirming his role as the leading attacker. Middle blockers Coolman and Fafchamps contributed effectively with both blocks and quick attacks, causing multiple problems for Finland’s defense. Finland tried rotating players with outside hitter Marttila and middle blocker Savonsalmi, but they couldn’t sustain accuracy against Belgium’s tall blocking front. Belgium finished this set with an even wider margin than the first, winning 25-17.
The third set witnessed Finland’s comeback attempts as Marttila and Ronkainen regained their scoring touch from the wings. However, Belgium’s stable defense and the cold finishers Reggers and Deroo extinguished any hopes of a turnaround. The set ended 25-21, confirming Belgium’s 3-0 victory.
At the end of the match, Reggers was the top scorer with 20 points, while Deroo contributed 19 points, showcasing his versatility in both offense and defense. Although Jokela stood out for Finland with 14 points, their monotonous playing style and lack of effectiveness in the middle court led to their elimination in the round of 16. Consequently, Belgium earned the right to face Italy in the quarterfinals after a highly convincing performance.
